Induced voltage keeping my extractor fan stuck ON

Morning All! Firstly sorry if this is in the wrong section, it wouldn't let me post in the DIY bit where i thought this should have gone. I've got a problem with my extractor fan staying on (new installation) It's a 'manrose' inline extractor fan with a timer. i've searched countless...

    Transformer for low voltage lights?

Anyone point me in the direction of a decent brand of transformer that will be fed from a dimmer switch? What exact type do I need? Have heard of some transformers packin' in after weeks.

Why would a LAP Voltage Detector be showing live current in this situation?

Hi, I purchased a LAP non-contact voltage detector to check my sockets. One of them is cracked and needs replacing. So I went to the Consumer unit and isolated the all of my circuits. Then I went back to the broken socket and tested it again. Everything appeared to be fine, and I removed...

Tripping RCD due to voltage dips?

A customer has called to say their RCD is tripping. I was planning to go tomorrow expecting a few N-E tests, identify the circuit, break it down etc. They called again to say nothing was now working (2 separate RCD's feeding 2 separate boards) and could I come straight away. I only had an hour...

Volt drop calculations - a couple of questions

Hi, I currently am working on some cable sizing calculations for an exercise in which we apply our knowledge and use of the OSG. We have a ficticious single-phase, light commercial installation for which we have designed the circuits to supply a range of requirements and loads. We have selected...

    Mains Voltage?

Hi, this is my first post, I have had a biorb 60 fish tank for a while and it has an air pump, my problem is that this air pump. It's extremely loud. It is not what it is standing on as it still makes a racket in the air. I bought a new supposedly silent pump that was completely silent at the...

HV phase lost, strange voltages on LV side

Hi, Storme Katie dislodged one of the HV jumpers on the DNO 11 KV network, so the local 11KV 415 transformer was single phasing. I expected to get 240, or 120V but there were some people getting 150V and I got about 70 volts and it was indepenent of load. I am trying to work out why not 120V? Thanks

    Single Core 230Volt Supply??

A farmer client has a supply cable going underground from the DNO's kennel to a large barn converted to stables with power and light. The cable is fed from a 30 Amp switch fuse and a preceeding 30 mA RCD. In the barn, I noted that though the power and light were on separate 2.5mm and 1.5 mm...

USB charging/low voltage point in boiler cupboard

First time poster, but here we go. My hot water tank cupboard in the bathroom was converted to a combi boiler. This takes up much less room so there is space for other stuff, e.g. I had a shaver socket wired in to charge up my electric toothbrush. I think this is from the lighting circuit...

    Mastervolt Earth Fault

We've been called out to a system with a mastervolt 3200 which was installed 2012. There are 2 separate systems at the property as there are 2 meters. One system is clocking up nicely but the other system is showing a earth fault on the inverter. We have investigated and tested all of the...

    3 phase low voltage??

Hi all I was called to a job this morning where the 3 phase supply was showing low voltage on two phases? The voltages where L1-245v L2-110v L3-135v could anybody give any possible reasons why this was the case? I have handed it over to...

    r1 + r2 testing and IR at 250 volts

Hi guys I have resit for 2394 Tuesday. Passed all theory but ran out of time on main part of practical which have to retake. I'm trying to look at the ways I can cut time down. I'm wondering if when testing r1 + r2 it is acceptable practice to just disconnect live conductor and and either...

    Low voltage halogen equivalent???

I have a customer who has in excess of 25 low voltage down lights that are on 24/7. They have a condition where they can't tolerate LEDs or CFL lamps and GU10's aren't bright enough. Does anyone know of a make of bulb that runs cooler than most as I am changed lamp holders every 6-8 mths. I've...

    2 way switch induced voltage?

Got a 2 way switch that gives 43 volts down one strapper when off, could this be an induced voltage, and if so why isn't it on the other strapper when it is off? Also voltage at light switch is 250-252v, the light switch was faulty under load so couldn't be switched, when powered down it...

    Voltage continuity tester

Can anyone recommend a good voltage and continuity tester? Nothing fancy but audible continuity test would be handy. And perhaps with a carry case? The NICEIC assessor wasn't too impressed 18months ago with the state of mine and I must be due a assessment again soon..... i think it may have...
