I have a number of circuits in a not very old Hager sub CU, with split RCDs. All of the active circuits (8 used in a 12 slot dual RCD CU) test fine. RCDs tripping fine under test with Megger MFT. However, I have a MTN B140 (40 amp obvs) MCB in the board that has nothing connected to it. ie...
I have been asked by Trading Standards to carry out a report on some electrical work installed by another company (5 years ago). The 'new' wet room has basically rotted away over 5 years, it has now been completely removed by another firm and is in the process of being redone.
The work by the...
have been to a convenience store and the rcbo circuit that is on a 32amp fuse keeps on tripping when it rains heavy. The circuit has a warmer plate, food warmer, ice cream freezer and a drinks freezer running on the circuit. I disconnected the appliances and plugged them back in and everything...
I am mostly curious as I don't think this is a very important issue.
In my bedroom I have 2 overhead recessed LED lights that are not on a dimmer. After several years of living with no issue, last week I noticed that they remained faintly on after turning the light switch off. They glowed...
Just curious, it doesn't happen to me often with what I charge but on occasion. Explaining what or why the costs are involved with the job never really seems to gain any ground.
According to the IET, Amendment 2 to the 18th Edition is being released in March 2022:
June 2025 now apparently - Edit Dan. For those who are landing on this old page. Thought I'd update it.
I have heard some rumors the 19th Edition will be released later this year. Does anybody know if this...
Hi,
Not quite a central heating system but the same kind of pump used I believe.
It is used to increase the pressure of the water system when the tap is turned on.
Today it started tripping the RCD.
It is located on the roof below the exterior water tank.
I removed the plastic cover that...
Wondering if anyone else has had this, getting 24v between live and neutral at pendant when dimmer is off, which means the light isn’t fully going off it’s still sort of glowing. When I replaced this for a regular switch it sorted the issue, just wondering if anyone else has had this and if just...
Spent yesterday morning running a spur in my kitchen from one double socket on the rfc to a new one along the same wall.
Original socket is just beside the multi gang grid switch for appliances. More on that later.
Wife came home from shopping with the birthday girl, ranted at me for not doing...
Hi all
Can anyone please advise, i have fitted a new fused light switch cover in the kitchen as the press switch part broke on the old one, however I wired the new one up and all worked well, but when I screwed it back onto the wall it would not work, took it off the wall and it worked again. 🤯
When i turn the oven on, the LED spots dim?
The house is so old and wiring is terrible, Could it be a shared neutral between the circuits somewhere? Could it just be the whole system is being overloaded? nothings ever tripped out because of it.
Has anyone else had a problem similar to this...
I have fitted a touch control switch to a lamp, (I have done many no problem)…..However in this table lamp with a cast iron base the device does not operate when connected to the base? But when unscrewed the light turns on and 3 stage dims as it should. Any ideas welcome please.
Hi All,
I’m a retired electrician from the Detroit area. My question is, I need to replace some old two prong receptacles in my daughters 75 year old home. Code says I can install a GFCI receptacle in the first receptacle of a group of receptacles and install standard three prong receptacles...

I'm a bit out of touch re 18th edition.
Is it really necessary to fit loads of additional metal saddles inside trunking when it's only 400mm above the concrete ground floor of a sports hall?
All the stuff about premature collapse makes sense, but where, in this case, if the cable going to...
Hi all,
I’ve got a question about an issue I’m having.
During a kitchen renovation we’ve decided to have open doors fitted to the patio and as a result I’ve fitted 2 way lighting to the kitchen spots.
I’ve also broken in to the permanent feed and neutral going to the spots first and run an...
I have run new cables, segregated the SDI cable running back, so the LED will switch independently and have also installed a capacitor, since I was informed that would be a fix but it bursts light. The picture shows bottom mech with the switch on and bottom mech with the switch off. Thanks so...
I'll be starting a a testing, inspection and compliance outfit at that end of the month and this will be my first proper job in that industry.
Those that do Commercial & Industrial daily or frequently; Any common things to look out for? Any timesavers, improved ways of working etc that could...
When replacing a light housing, I found the RCCB was somehow tripped. I first used a pen tester to check the wires and found them normal (no voltage). I then used a multimeter to test again. Here are the results:
L-N 7.4 v
L-E 6.8 v
N-E 3 V
After the RCCB was tripped, the readings were zero...
Adding an image of my set up
Basically this is the run across like 60-75 ft. The main line comes into a switch to control the entire line. That continues through 8 lights and then into an outlet. Originally After that outlet I had a light but I wanted to be able to control it independently...
