Daveyboy

Hi guys, Just chatting to my neighbour over the fence and he says hes just changed his broken shower like for like. He told me that it is a 10kw shower run off 6mm off a 45amp breaker. I was thinking to my self that not right its gotta be 10mm cable. I thought I would ask here before getting my books out as I dont do many shower and thought I'd get my facts right before I told him. I dont know the cable run but our houses are the same so I know the run is no more than 10 metres. I know it might get away with 6mm what do you guys think?

have that argument all the time. never seen a 10.5 kw shower draw mre than 40A

For a new installation I'd always recommend a 10mm cable for a shower over 9kw to allow for the future.

I wouldn't recommend putting a 10KW shower on a 6mm cable

You are probably right but if you get down to the real nitty gritty maths and the time to reach the full 10kw of energy etc the shower would have been well used....

I went to one the other week that kept tripping the 40A mcb. Changed it till a 50A and it has been fine.

One thing I find strange is although we know they dont draw the full 46A how come shower pull cords are only rated at 45A?

I work for a housing association and we've been told that any shower above 8.5Kw MUST be wired in 10mm cable. Seems excessive to me as it depends on derating factors as mentioned above. Lots of cursing at work!!

10.5kW shower runs 43.7A (at its rated 240V). This is within the ccc of 6mm that is direct clipped (no derating due to insulation). So on a 45A breaker it's fine.

47A is the continuous rating for (clipped direct) 6mm and a shower is very rarely used continuously.

I thought I would add to this thread with a description of an installation I found last Saturday to see if anyone can better it

I hope I am not Hijacking this thread because the relevance is the sometimes over engineered current carrying capacity that we are fearful of not installing, such as the concerns about 6mm on large showers

It may put loading in a different perspective :)

A mate had his 100 m/amp stand alone Rcd tripping.
"Will I have a look"
Wylex 4-way (Lights Ring + ,Shower)
Neutral earth fault traced to Double socket spur for cooker hood in extended kitchen

This double socket spur was feeding a total of 3 other double sockets which are being used for Washer. Tumble dryer,Fridge,Freezer,Microwave, ,Wylex 4-way in chicken shed 30 meters down the garden,External sun flood, cooker hood and lastly a Halogen cooker hob with a socket for an ignitor, which was jointed in the wall somewhere along the way all off a 30 amp 3036

I said "how have you managed to run that lot",his reply was,"we dont put the rings of the cooker on full,so as not to blow the fuse"
This is diversity arithmatic on another planet :D

The point I will make to tie it up with the thread is, given the enormous possibility of overload and fire with this install
The cable feeding the spur at the origin of this lot was untarnished,no melting insulation,no copper discolouring, nothing to suggest lack of current carrying capacity
The occasional blown fuse and the circuit worked like a good un

Slight overloading of a 6mm cable on a large rated shower, that is unlikely to run at maximum rating, and even then only for short duration is much less concerning than the install I desribed
