Hello,Was told this today and am wondering if it is correct. If you have 240v ac and do not use the neutral then you get 12v ac?Thanks

If I may offer a humble suggestion to the OP, when you are presented with an outlandish or suspect piece of information, instead of simply asking someone 'is this true', try to analyse it with the theoretical tools at your disposal. You were right to be sceptical but don't give up on answering the question for yourself at that point. Electricity behaves according to logical, predictable rules, which form part of the electrician's arsenal of problem-solving methods. If you apply basic electrical theory, the question immediately looks like nonsense, and answers itself for you. I often do remote diagnosis on electronic systems over the phone and I have to distrust everything I am told by the people at the other end, unless I can prove it to myself in my mind.

I am an apprentice yes. I did not believe what he was saying as I do not see how this would work without a transformer, this is why I was checking here. Thanks

Have you ever heard of a wind up cause I think that's what he is doing to you.

And while your at the trade counter can you pick me up a tin of tartan paint and some plastic masonry drill bits..........ta:)

I would say though that there is a lot of myth and misunderstanding about what happens 'without a neutral'. I have met many a man who doesn't have a clear understanding of the effects of neutral loss in a 3-phase system, or what currents flow in a neutral from certain kinds of load etc. If I were going to try and catch a spark out on something, this would be fairly high on the list.

I think I would have to approach that question after a few cups of tea, too early in the day and my answer would most definitely offend those of a sensitive nature!

a bag of assorted holes
We call them knock-ins. A lot of people think that when you are going to fit a conduit into a metalclad box, you have to knock a piece of metal out. Actually what you are doing is knocking a hole in. Benjamin Franklin made the same mistake with electrons.

If you were to use a quantum cutter for these holes

I suppose you would only know if the hole is exists when you try and push that bush through and maybe then find its still solid metal lol

We had a chippy send his apprentice down to jewsons for a new bubble for the level. Turns out stabila make a level where the capsule can be taken out and replaced. Cue a rollicking for the chippy when the boss got the invoice!
