Hi....I have been asked by a local land owner, who lives in the local mansion!!!!!!!!!! If I could replace all the double sockets in the house....the main house....not the West wing where the kitchen is....lol The trouble is the old double round pin 15amp sockets have bigger face plates than normal sockets, I haven't actually measured them yet. I'm doing a bit of research first. Are there companies that specialize in this sort of thing. They have to be BRAAAARRRRSSS also. I was told. Those totally spiffing good chaps on tharrt electricians forum are bound to know, I proceeded to tell one.

Who are they made by Archy?? Looks like the sort of thing ''Wentworth'' would produce...

EDIT.... Just blown the photo up, ''Walsall'' who were another manufacture that made up-market face plate accessories... Reckon anything like this is going to be expensive to replace or modify!! Your not going to get them off the shelf at your local wholesalers that's for sure!! lol!!!

Youu could remove the old brass plates and take them to a machinist to mill them out for the new size, then drill and tap for the m3.5 in the appropiate place. They would then fit back where they come from with minimal disturbance.

Right... Just been to the house, measured and taken photographs. Measurements in old money are 3 1/4 inches x 6 1/4 inches (83mm x 159mm) and yes they are singles, no idea why I had it my head they were doubles. Probably the size. lol
Archy ....How many of those sockets you pictured do you have?

Could you not get a std double metal backing box in there then just a standard double socket and use a fingerplate surround that could be painted the same colour as the wall?? I know most look cheap n nasty but the customer might go with it?

Isn't a standard double socket (or single for that matter) higher than that in the picture? So you couldn't really use the cut out brass as a surround. I saw some sockets the other day that were much 'shorter', must have been designed to fit more easily on skirting boards or something; these may fit. You could put the plug in upside down but the design was such that this alone didnt open the shutters. I think they were white MK, don't know if they are available or what other finishes they come in.

A Typical Squire, always wanting the impossible!! lol!!

Well in this case if he wants minimal disruption to his Manor House it's gonna cost him!! Your only real choice if he's not going to accept the existing brass plates being used as finger plates as such, is going to someone like Wentworth, with one of those existing outlets as a template and asking them for a price to produce a replacement with a double switched 13A outlet!! lol

I can just imagine what the cost per unit is going to be!!! lol!!

Would it be possible to 'think outside the box' here? Has the client specified they want the sockets to be exactly the same but 13A instead of 15A or could you just use off the shelf brass or 'antique brass' sockets?
Alternatively could you get a metal dealer to cut some rectangles of brass to the right size and install panel sockets as Tony suggests, and maybe a toggle switch?

I would suggest 'upgrading' to metric sizes so any kind of replacement would be easier to find, unless you get a load of backboxes and machine screws shipped over from America (I can't see them adopting the metric system any time soon).

You could use panel mount sockets as Tony suggested . The plates you can get laser cut from Brass stock plate. 15 Amp toggle switches are also available.

Another option is paint. I got some copper paint not long ago and applied it to plastic components. The end result pleasantly surprised even me, I'm sure you will find brass paint if you shop around.

It's a mansion/stately home not a council house......

I've seen finger plates used in stately homes albeit a brass/plate sort of fitting with standard brass sockets/switches to either protect the decor or to save repairing the decor after electric upgrade, so not really a stupid idea.
