Some body I know has asked me to do a consumer unit change on his domestic property. He has said he has brought the consumer unit.
Looking at it he has been sold a consumer unit with a double pole main switch and a single rcd protecting all the ways. As in pre 16th edition. The 17th edition says up and downstairs lighting should be now separated on to separate rcd. for safety aspects.
As the regs books is a non-statutory document as in advisory. AM I still able to use the consumer unit as in the single rcd protecting all circuits?

IF you change the fuse board, you become responsible for every circuit you liven up when its done. Any circuit that comes under special requirements must comply with current regs. As soon as you put a new fuse board up, every circuit must conform to the regs in there current state. So ( without going to deeply ), every circuit will probably have to be protected by an RCD. However, you should not use a single RCD to protect all circuits that require an RCD to preserve that a fault on one circuit would not cause a total loss of power to all circuits.

So use RCBOs as well as protectiing some circuits with the built-in RCD.

Take care

Took a look at the comsumer unit he had bought, It was purchased at B&Q reduced price, A split Load Crabtree consumer unit wtih 100A main switch 6 ways unprotected a 63A rcd protecting the other six ways. As he only has 1 40A cooker circuit 1 16A water heater, 2 ring mains and 2 lighting radials circuits. Would the way to go be putting all of these circuit on RCBO. So enabling his current cu to be used,
Do Crabtree make a RCBO, Could I buy RCBO that would fit into this Crabtree Starbreaker cu.
Or Should I tell him to Blag his money back,As B&Q have sold him a unit that could not be installed as it's not to current regulation standard.
