Last year I done my city+guids 2330 Level 2, and I am doing my 2330 Level 3 now, I am also doing my portfolio for the 2356 NVQ part too.

On the books we use in college, it says on the covers: 'Fully up-to-date with 17th Edition IEE wiring regs'

Now my question is, after I finish my 2330 level 3, and 2356 NVQ level 3 this year, will I have to do the 17th edition course aswell?

In addition to this course, I was wondering what other courses would be quite important to take ( I was thinking maybe inspec + testing, and isn't there a reg or wiring exam that apprentice are recomended to do?)

Thanks for your time

Joe

Your 2356 will be your 17th Edition. The course you're thinking of is an "update" course, technically for those who qualified prior to the 17th Edition, though now widely used as "qualification" for the five week wonder courses.

Once you've got your 2356 out of the way, get a little experience on your own so to speak, the look at doing your 2391 basic inspection and testing. I think that's the 2391-20. There's a 2391-10 as well, though I wouldn't recommend doing the upper qual before you have at least a year of two practical day in day out work under your belt.

I can't think of any other course that you'd really need to do, if you pass your level 3.

Thanks for taking the time to answer pal, and with regards to the experience 'on the tools'....I have nearly had my 1st year of working in the trade, 1st few months was with a 1man band, now I with a massive company that works council jobs

Can I ask if you are using your Regs book regularly at college? One of the places I teach at had level 3 guys with regs books still wrapped up.
Does your lecturer make you refer to nearly every regulation you see pop up in the syllabus?

to be honest, no1 in our class has the bs7671 regs (big red book) our lecturer sometime refers to a reg from it. The books we use is...
Advanced Electrical Installation Work Trevor Linsley | WHSmith.co.uk

and the iee onsite guide

That's good mate - thing I was really trying to get at it 2391 (T&I) is about experience and practical testing as much as anything, and the more time on the tools you have under your belt, the easier some of it will be.

Good to see you're getting the right courses though :)

Well how could you consider yourself capable of using the regs book to work effectively and compliant if you don't know how to use it?
You don't need to name them, but are you going to a college, training centre or similar??

Where I lecture students doing level 3 MUST have:

BS7671:2008
On Site Guide
Electricians Guide to the Building Regulations
a study book, Trevor Linsley, Scadden or similar (I prefer Scadden).

I've also worked out of the Design guide, GN3, and some other books which some of my guys have also got and I make sure they make the most of them.

The 1st level 3 c+g gola exam is in 2 weeks (unit 1) which is half health+safety and half electrical system and motors, the only regs covered by city+guids in this unit is the health and safety regs...which we have covered!

Maybe in unit 2 and 3, where it goes into detail about the regs more, we might refer to the bs7671 more

Hope this cleared this up a little, as don't want to be thought of as a fast-track-spark!!

Hi Bill,

Just to clarify, the fundamental Inspection and Testing course is the 2392

2391-10 Is inspecting and testing

2391-20 Is the old 2400 design course

I always get those the wrong damn way round - thanks :)

It was 2400 in my day, and I just don't get the hang of the new numbering - or these damn pound coin things - what's next? Taking away feet and inches from us? :)

Unit 1 Outcome 5A refers to part 4, section 521, 522, 527, Chapter 53, Appendix 4
Unit 1 Outcome 5B refers to section 524
Unit 1 Outcome 6 refers to section 552

to name a couple..

When does your course finish, if you have not started unit 2 yet?

He asked if he would be trained to the 17th edition, to then declare that he has never looked at the book. Your post is pointless.

started in sept 2010, will finish around June 2011 (1day a week at college 4days a week working) I have done many mock unit 1 exams on sites like smartscreen and swindon massive, and I managed fine without owning a bs7671 book

I'm not going to waste my time any more trying to help you.

You clearly know better than I do.
