I have just had the dreaded call from the repairers saying that my Metrel tester is knackered as it was dropped last week! The cost to repair it is about £100 short of a new one and they only give a 3 month warranty on the repair. I think I want a new one as I may be able to get an extended warranty.

Which meters are you guys using and are they any good??

Thanks in advance

Joe

A Megger is the obvious choice mate, but as I understand, some of the models had a problem with the no-trip loop testing.

That was a few months ago, not sure if it's been fixed yet.

The instructors at my college recommend Kewtech kit if you don't want to go down the Megger route..

Is the megger a decent tester for the money? I have seen them around but when at college we had Kewtech and then when using the boss's he had an old Fluke and then a Metrel which is why I went for one when went on my own years ago as it was familier.

I have one of the new meggers and I would steer clear if I were you.

I have always used meggers - not sure I would buy another based on my latest purchase.

If you like metrel then get a metrel.

I was actually just looking at the new megger and was quite impressed with the look of it. What did you find wrong compared to the earlier models?

I'm in two minds on the metrel as if they are that delicate then should I get another? I only dropped it from just above knee height and that was due to the chippy putting saw dust all over it and the strap just slipped straight through my fingers :(

I've used a Megger 1552 for the past few years and find it to be an excellent meter.
I used a Metrel Instaltest 61557 when my Megger was in for calibration and I hated it!

New meggars:

Build quality - crap
No Trip - Unusable without firmware upgrade
Leads - Crap

This is just my opinion perhaps there are some good ones out there.

Yes I agree megger 1500 series were great.

Megger off the list then

The Metrel ones appear to be fairly well priced but its hard when you've got hand over that much money to decide which one to go for, whether to have bells and whistles or just what's needed for now.

I prefer Kewtech.

I have a megger (not one of the newer ones) and I can't fault it.

I had numerous Metrels, of which the leads are useless and they are depleting in number as they keep failing calibrations.

I don't like the fluke because of the annoying noise they make under continuity testing, however they are a favourite for guys I work with and seem to be the better overall.

Had a Fluke 1653B for the last couple of years, before that a Fluke 1653 ( which worked fine until it was stolen from my van ). Never had a problem with either as long as the batteries are ok, just do a bettery test regularly.
