does anyone know about anything in the 18th edition and the requirement to upgrade consumer units when electric hobs are replaced?

i had a customer ask me about it this morning.

Hi Simon and Welcome to the Forum .
No changes to fixed wiring are required by BS7671 when appliances are replaced. However, the detail here is the new cooker’s manufacturer may state something in their installation instructions that needs to be considered.

Considered maybe, but manufacturers instructions are guidance only and do not have to be followed, especially when they are wrong, which quite surprisingly is quite often.

They might be confused regards the fitting of RCD’s when adding to circuits.

This may be something to do with Currys or another Domestic appliance supplier and thier "Installers".

I am going to replace a consumer unit this afternoon thanks to an induction hob being installed..
The extra earth leakage on the installation from the hob causing the RCD incomer to trip..
So they may be recommending a cu change based on this kind of scenario

Think the clue is Charlie's statement of " extra earth leakage" caused by the new Hob.

No problem with cumulative leakage if the hob is on its own RCBO.

i spoke to a Currys installer this morning and he had no idea what i was on about.
