Im not sure if anyone is going to know the answer to this question but hopefully someone will. Haveing recently completed my 2230 I thought I was trained to 17th eddition so pressumed I could claim that I have my 17th eddition certificate as I have been trained to these regulations. Ive just signed up to a 17th edition update course at my college whicinvolves two thurday 3 hour classes and a exam on the 3rd thursday. The thing is my electrical mates say that I dont need to do this as I am 17th edition trained and it is for those guys who are trained sparks but to say 16th edition and just need to get themselves upto 17. the lecturer says I cant claim to have my 17th edition qualification untill I do this course. Ussually its a ten week course but as Ive done the 2330 I can take the update. Can anyone tell me whos right. Some jobs ask for 17th edition fire alarm insitaltions for example.

the 17th ( 2382?)is a completely different qual. to the 2330. you are lucky to be able to get it with the upgrade. that is generally only available to 16th qual. taken after some time in 2001.

Hi all
i do believe lofty is correct that he has only got to take the update !! When i did 2330 i was also told this but i had my 16th at the time which as you stated if passed after 2001 only ammenment needed if before that date then full course

You need the C&G 2382 17th ed not the up date as above. The up date is just that, the new/changed regs from the last set of regs.

When you pass your up date exam, employers will ask you for your actual regs cert so there is NI point in doing the up date if you haven't done the 2382.

I know that ten week course can seem long and more expensive, other option is to just pay for the exam only without a course if you think you can pass it (and understand it) without tuition.

the 10 week course, including the exam cost is only ÂŁ250 at colleges (evenings) i tend to agree with paul here. you should take the full 2382.

I finnished the 2330 in 2008 the last year that anyone was being trained to 16th ed. So i did the 17th update, however because i presume you completed your level 3 after 2008 you do not have to take it, however it would be an advantage to have, because the 2382 proves you understand how to use the brb or bgb, and that is something which employer want, and you'll notice on job adverts they ask for time served electricians with nvq level 3, 2382, 2391.

Yes because what they are asking for is if you can interpret the current edition of the regs and apply that to the work you do....and if you have the knowledge/competency to both inspect and test that work to industry standards........its no point just having the 2330 without the other stuff....I know that you are taught about inspection and testing on the 2330 (I am doing the same course)....but the 2391 is an industry benchmark and genuine level 3 stuff.........plus potential employers can afford to be picky these days n all.........

cheers for the responces Im probably lucky but will have to check.

Im sure this is the 2382 that im doing but beacause I have done the 2330 I can a 2 week update and get the full qual. I think the idea must be because we are supposed to have used the regs book more than we did during the 2330, but not sure.....

I wont lie the book baffles me I know its full of usefull information but I dont know what to do with it. Obviously your supposed to use it reguarly..... and etch some of this info onto your brain but 2 weeks is not long enough and I doubt ten is either?
how do you no what to look up or use the book for initially. I mean you dont get to a job and it says you will need to refer to regs 4.3.45 3 and 3.4.1.1 are u supposed to spot things that have a reg, can u give me some examples of when youve done something and thought hang on this will have a reg and looked it up, do u think u have installed things but not followed the regs because u presumed it didnt have a reg

intense questions but im try to see if theres a way to pass this in 2 weeks

The brb (soon to be green of course) is laid out in a logical manner as you will see.....All the info you are ever likely to need is in there but if i were you i`d also invest in the on site guide and guidance note three as well.....
