Im not sure if anyone is going to know the answer to this question but hopefully someone will. Haveing recently completed my 2230 I thought I was trained to 17th eddition so pressumed I could claim that I have my 17th eddition certificate as I have been trained to these regulations. Ive just signed up to a 17th edition update course at my college whicinvolves two thurday 3 hour classes and a exam on the 3rd thursday. The thing is my electrical mates say that I dont need to do this as I am 17th edition trained and it is for those guys who are trained sparks but to say 16th edition and just need to get themselves upto 17. the lecturer says I cant claim to have my 17th edition qualification untill I do this course. Ussually its a ten week course but as Ive done the 2330 I can take the update. Can anyone tell me whos right. Some jobs ask for 17th edition fire alarm insitaltions for example.

and dont forget that if/when you decide to go part p they will want to see that you have this book......and the first thing in your toolbox so to speak should be the on site guide as well..........i have mine with me at all times when out working and like to study the brb when at home when i have a mo`.......

I don't quite understand this.
My brother did his 2360 during the 15th.
He recently took the 2391 and is now considered by the JIB to be 17th edition qualified?
He has never taken either the 2381 or the 2382.
Well i think the normal run of things is to take the 2382 (17th) first before undertaking the 2391 but as you have pointed out.........odd that one........

As i think we are all aware now though...the rules for part p are changing as regards the minimum level of competency and i dont think the 17th alone is enough......my belief is that it has to be accompanied with the 2330 level 3 from january.........

Hi mate its got to be nvq lv3 or equivalent from jan existing members of scams are exempt from this requirment but they bringing out a new domestic only nvq lv3 another scam

Or all the newly set up private providers would have been dead in the water they bend the rules for thereselves and make up new ones and leave the ones trying to do the job swinging

Bottom line is that you "have" the 2330 but you cannot claim to "have" the 17th. It's simply that the 2330 is for want of a better phrase "taught to the principles of the 17th".

We had the same discussion when I was doing my Level 3 2330 and as above the consensus was do the full 17th as its what most employers want.

I actually did my 17th whilst doing Level 2 2330 though at a different college. Did it over 4 full days with the exam at the end.

Now i feel a bit mis sold what 2330 gave me..i did my 2330 this summer i was under the impression by the college it was the right course for me and it was a 17th edition course.ie i would be "17th edition qualified".maybe ive misunderstood? .there was no mention that i needed 2382 or 2391 or both to be 17th ed qualified when i enroled.im beginning to think i wasn't fully informed.
does “full 17th” as quoted by clicon357 post number 22 mean having 2382 or 2391 or both to make one 17th ed qualified?
i went back to see my college tutor recently and he said i should take 2391 both modules (whatever that means) to give me any real chances of progressing properly.he didn't mention anything about 2382 .im a bit wary of the advice but should i take it? (given that i got distinctions in all but one exam on 2330).

Only by taking the 2382 will you have "the 17th". 60 questions, 2 hours with the regs, BS7671 in front of you. Prices vary greatly, for instance when I did the 17th I was at North West Kent College still doing my 2330 Level 2. NWK wanted I think something like ÂŁ680 from memory for a 12 evening course run by one of the guys who has his name in the front of the regs (John Elliot?). That was 12 x 2 1/2 hour sessions. Instead I went to East Surrey College - they offered the same course run over 4 full days spread over 4 weeks. The best bit is that seemingly some colleges subsidise the courses if they have cash leftover. It was ÂŁ235 which INCLUDED a copy of the regs and the NICEIC learning guide to the regs. I had the regs already and went and bought the NICEIC guide from TLC. Think I ended up paying ÂŁ135 as I already had the books. I know now their prices have gone up but I think its now circa ÂŁ300.

Planning on doing the 2391 next. Out of interest I believe that goes more into 3-phase stuff on the testing than 2330.

Get all you can - the other bloke at the interview might pip you for the job!

Basic electrical training to 2330 and 2356/7 is, or should be, to the up to date regulations. That means, if you trained to the 17th ed. then you are 17th qualified.

However, most employers require a BS7671 2382 course to say that you know something about the regs.

It does not mean that only having obtained the 2382 you are now fully qualified to the 17th ed. Its basically a refresher course to get you up to speed to what BS7671 requires.

Having said that, not all 2330 courses actually teach the regs within their courses since they only focus on the basic health and safety, electrical technology and science principles with a bit of simulated practical chucked in for good measure.

The better 2356/7 2330 courses from reputable colleges and training centres will include a package that has the above and a 2382 refresher top up at the end of the course. This will cover you for all possible queries from prospective employers.

so my best option would be to do 2382 next...ok .ackbarthestar...thanks.probably just as well ive searched for college courses in staffordshire for the 2391 it doesnt look like there is one within 30 miles.
"luckily" one of our 2330 evening lessons per week the tutor reffered to 7671 brb every lesson on every topic we did.i found that lesson the hardest of all.i must admit i didnt take all of it in but ive still go most of the handouts.
It did fall very short on anything 3 phase,we did testing on a 3 phase board for about 20 minutes most of which i didnt see as im a midget only 5'6 lol.

I was dead lucky, I revised like mad but on the day had a killer migraine. Asked the invigilator if there was anywhere I could buy some Nurofen and he said "No, you wouldn't have thought it would have been a problem getting drugs in a college!". I did it in 58 minutes dead, didn't check anything. The guy I did it with thought I'd given up and left the exam. Got told there and then that I passed with very nearly a clean sweep. Found out later I got I think 98.3% the second highest mark ESC had ever had - the top mark was 100%. Even managed to get a bar chart print out (which you don't usually get) along with the 17th cert.
