hi everyone,

just finished doing my level 3 C+G 2330 and just wondered how realistic it is to be able to complete the NVQ when you are a self employed subby? as there is no apprenticeships around atm i am thinking of puting myself through the rest as self employed.

do you have to do industrial stuff for the portfolio or can you do just domestic and a bit of commercial? i take it as well you have to do some new build stuff too.

probably the big thing too is can you register for the nvq as self employed?

your thoughts please

been in the trade about 6 years, but never bothered with the Nvq, its only since i heard about the qualifications changing that i thought id better do it now just incase i couldnt do it later.

anyway yes being self employed is ok, am2 not needed as adult with experience (already hold 2391 etc etc) you dont need to be working full time, just enough to cover the units. its mainly a load of questions over internet, send in photos and couple site assesments - very easy took about 12 weeks and now im just about to get jib approved

oh and college costs were covered by the college - goverment funding which i think is still available at min

Yes the NVQ is open to all electricians

Mr E is correct with the NVQ description, if you can get it for free at your local college great, but funding has been cut drastically.

If you find you its not free try VQ Training - Home cheapest around with full support online and on phone until complete. Also monthly insallments available.

I did the NVQ back in the 80,s when it first came into the cirriculum with N.G Baileys, I think they piloted the scheme. The 2356 end registration is Dec 2010 after that it will be the 2357 where the AM2 will be mandortory even for practising operatives.
