hi i trained quite some time ago under the c+g 236 worked as a sparks for 8 years and then went into fire alarms which i did for 7 years i got made redundant and now want to get back into domestic installs, i have sit my part p week long point less coarse which i could of just turned up and sat the 20q exam and passed, and i have done the 17th edition coarse to bring me up to spec, i just need to know what do i do now, do i ring the niceic to ask to join the domestic installer scheme but i have not done any jobs of my own and have herd something about i have to pay building control 250 pound every time i do a item of work, untill i get certified under a scheme, im at a bit of a lost end as what to do, can any one give any advice of what to do next please thanks in advance

If you have 2360 1&2(like myself) and 17th edition you can do 2 jobs,1 minor works job(alteration to wiring in a kitchen perhaps)and 1 major job(upgrade of consumer unit),contac the niceic/elecsa or whoever you want to use and explain your dilemma, they want our money so will help you part with it.there is plenty of willing people on here who can give you advice when you get an assessment date if you get stuck on anything.

thanks for reply since both of these jobs are notifiable jobs who do i notify and how do i sign these off, do i explain to customer that a body will need to come and inspect/test my work ? plus what do i do if i get a few jobs before im accepted with one of these bodys ? cheers

O went with ELECSA when I first set out on my own, rang them to ask how I could do it and they explained they weren't there to police the system just to register jobs' You should ring who ever you decide to go with and explain your situation.

Although unheard of I wouldn't rely on passing the assesment so may be best just to turn them down or postpone them until after you have your registration.

I would call the part p provider you want to use and ask their advice, they might say to go through labc first, then they can see these jobs and get you on their scheme,i has to do similar, done a cu change, notified labc prior to work(they wanted copies of all my certs etc)they sent me a form and charged £60,when you say £250 that is generally because its diy people/the unskilled who have carried out work then they need to hire an electrician to give the labc a certificate to say the work complies.so in your case as a skilled but at present unregistered sparks you would only need to pay a smaller fee.
