I am about to take the 2382-12 exam, which I have studied for through electacourse.
Today I had a look at applying for an ECS card, and there are several requirements that you must have, but 2382-12 is not one of them. and as far as I can tell, having a 2382 qualification does not entitle you to an ECS card. which has made me think do I also need to do the 2330, or something similar.

if you are going to spend out and take the exam for the 2382 you must carry on and take all the other exams too otherwise there is no reason whatsoever to take the exam in the first place, it is a good start and a stepping stone to go onto another electrotechnical qualification course etc, 2330 level 2 and level 3 (for starters), the only people i know who take on staff with just the 2382 is a local electrical trade counter (god knows why?, they even put there staff on it if they dont have it!), the only comparison between the 2392 and the 2382 is that they are both multiple choice exams taken on a pc thats all, the 2392 and 2382 are not the same.

Hi, i have a couple of friends that have done the 2382 as part of a short course. They both said it was a good start to get them into the industry and it helped them to understand properly the prosesses of inspection & testing. But like ezzz said there's no point knowing disconnection times if you don't know what there for, i suppose it depends what you want to do and what your goal is.

Don't be put of by what you read on the internet cos alot of people just try to put you off because they're greedy and they want all the work for themselves. Both of my friends earn a decent living as domestic installers now

Hi Jimmymac, I am not being greedy but more concerned that someone might spend a ton of cash and time trying to get into an industry where experience counts massively for a poor return on his investment.

Hi Jim
I am now thinking what would be the best thing to do after the 2382. my local college is charging ÂŁ1600 per term to do the 2330 or whatever course they are doing now. and they are very selective about who they allow to do the course.
I have been studying through electacourse, and they are recomending that I do the 2392 next.

I thought colleges were now only allowed to admit people in a workplace to do the 2330?
The 2392 is the poor mans 2391, thats the one to do!

Hi jonoxnam, i wasn't aiming that at you pal. I think sometimes we forget how difficult it is to get started in this industry. It must be a little dis-heartening for new comers but like you say, experience is very important in this industry.

Hi bobee, you could go for the 2392 next as an intro or you could go directly for the 2391 if you felt confident enough to take it on but it will mean quite alot of revision and studying cos if you just go for it without the studying you'll probably have no chance. But good luck whatever you decide to do and as a teacher friend of mine always says "success is only a matter of determination".......if only!
