Hi lads and lass's

I'm after a little advice, I've spent the last 2 years going to night school and have gained the following qualifications, 2330 level 2 & 3, 2392, 2382.
My question is, what are your thoughts on doing 2391? Is it necessary?

I really value your input on this as I'm currently a service engineer so not directly working in the business.

Regards

Ben

As Phil says go for it mate as its worth it and another string to your bow just read GN3 over and over and the 2392 should help you also

Mine was ÂŁ455 for 8 week evening 3 hrs + ÂŁ85 for a optional practical day

150 .... WOW! I paid ÂŁ260 for 10 weeks, ÂŁ200 for the 10 weeks, & ÂŁ60 was ÂŁ30 for theory exam, ÂŁ30 for practical. It was rock bottom and at the "proper" college (so not really aimed at making a massive rip off profit). Everyone there was working for a company as a sparky in some fashion or other.

The price varies wildly doesn't it. So thats ÂŁ150 to ÂŁ600 + .............

Go for it mate, get all the badges you can whilst its still fresh. I sat mine on 10th March this year and have just got the results today, a PASS! It takes them 11 weeks to mark it! I don't mind telling you this feeling of pure elation is well worth the effort.

Thanks Tony, thats a good price alright! I payed ÂŁ415 but that included a copy of GN3. Now my company are going to pay for the other one, 2391-20 design course. I think the City & Guilds Exam Success book is well worth getting as well. Good luck with yours.

and remember.

for everyone on here thats said "I've passed" there were probably 2 or 3 others per person that .... didn't.

Which is why its worth something rather than a GOLA multiple guess

It used to be that you could not do the 2391 unless you had a minimum of 5 yrs behind you as you are expected to have experience to make judgement calls when testing and inspecting and fault finding but i guess its got easier to do as so many new out of college guys seem to have now. One guy i took on with it last year took over an hour to second fix 2 single sockets had not even heard of FP/firetuff or many other types of everyday cable. He was gone by the end of the day as how could i trust someone to sign a cert if he did not understand what he was looking at. so bits of paper mean nothing anymore.
This is not a run-down on people trying to better themselves but more a try not to run before you can walk advice, it may lose you a job rather than gain you one sometimes.

shuff01 - i'm not in the trade but did my 2391 straight after 2330, 2 & 3 and 17th edition regs. It's definately easier to do 2391 when the other courses are fresh in your mind, so nows the best time. I've got to admit I did purely because it interested me, but as the guys say, it doesn't account for much without hands on experience.

Hi needasparks

there's a mixture of things in your reply, I can see what you're saying but it felt a touch negative when reading. I was trying to be positive. I don't think you can argue away the fact that the 2391-10 is a proper exam, you cannot pass it unless you posess the knowledge in-your-head (in whatever fashion, it is in there), and alsothat it is THE hardest C&G exam out.

That said.

You are right, a piece of paper and alot of studying does not replace practical experience. As always. this will always be the nub of the problem. Until the loop is closed so to speak. :)

Correct the 2391 is a prestigious qualification in this trade as it shows your competency in inspection, testing and certification. (making sure the installation is safe!)

Hi Folks
This is my first post on this forum and this has been an interesting thread as I too have never been employed in electrical work but I do come from an electronics background so have technical knowledge. I have in recent years gained the C&G 2392, 2382 & 2377 and I'm due to take the 2391 exam in less than 2 weeks. I'm able to hold my own amongst other employed sparks in the class in answering the questions. I would like to gain employement in the electrical field, however, without having done the ground work in gaining these qualifications at my own time & cost I believe no employeer will even consider me. Also, due to my age which is 36 which is not in my favour. But, I just need to keep plugging away and show employers that I have the desire to work in the electrical field. I'm re-assured to hear that there are others out there like me in the same boat. I would just like to find out from people on this forum what would be the next best steps to take to be considered as having enough qualifications and to be considered by prospective employers ?
