It seems like a lot of us are studying for the 2391 and I thought of starting this thread. We can become study budys, ask each other questions, answer them and give us all help and advice. I'm sure that people like Wilder, Sintra and all the other members (to many to list) can keep an eye on us to make sure we don't go off track. I'm not doing this so I can just pass an exam, I'm doing it so I understand as much as I possibly can. Ok first thing first, books. GN3, 17th ed, OSG and the Practical guide to inspection, testing and certification by Kitcher to me are the minimum. Any other books you can recommend please tell us, that's what this thread is for. I'm doing mine in Febuary, when are you doing yours? have you tried and failed the test? if so why and are you taking it again? What area do you need help in, can you help others in areas that you are good at? Maybe each day, post a question on here for us and give the answer the next day. Any ideas are welcome. I think this forum is the best place to learn from. The wealth of knowledge and experience that the members have is far superior than any college, we shouldn't waste it.

Sounds good to me, just booked my 2391 for January with the theory exam being on the 10th of Feb.

I've got the above plus I think im going to purchase the NICEIC book on Inspection & Testing also.

Think if we ask Widdler nice enough he would be a good person to get on board with this.

Yes, Widdler teaches the 2391 so what a guy to have on your side. I'll send him a pm to ask him to give us some pointers to get us started.

I will help with anything I can!

Believe me, the 2391 aint as hard as you expect it to be.... Until you walk out of the exam and you start to doubt yourself.

But put the work into it and you WILL pass. Good luck to you all.

Thanks GStueyXR but the reputation of the exam makes me think it will be the hardest test I'll ever do. That's why I'm going to study hard as I can so the terminology becomes second nature to me. I understand that a lot of people fail just because they don't follow safe practice guides. First tip on this thread, play safely kids and don't fry your examiner, he won't pass you.

I've got a question Can the 2391 be passed by anyone who hasnt had hands on Testing Experience except in College. ??? As im getting the 2392 and 2391 for free from a european Funding scheme called Response 2 redundancy .

Dont get me wrong I know it only has a 40% Pass rate in the Whole country so im under no illusions but if it's not costing me anything then I might as well have a good crack at it.

Hi paul
Like you say and gstuey if you put the effort in and learn all correct terminology, and then it wont be as bad as you think
I passed first time but i studied every day for over 4 months as much as i could as well as the 8 week evening course so like you said it becomes second nature to you
learning everything especially gN3
also get a copy of gs 38 you can download a copy
memorandum of guidance on elecy at work regs 1989
the other books you have already said are whats needed learn bs7671 part 7 as some of this comes up
learn all tests and how to explain them in bullet points you can use diagrams also
practiced drawing fully labelled earth fault loop paths for all systems
take lots of notes in the lessons
exam success is helpful
safe isolation procedure
calculations
ip ratings
codes for PIRs
basically everything you can most of it is in gn3
but the kitchers guide to inspection and testing is good
i also have scaddons guide
nic guide to domestic PIR and
nic guide to inspection, testing and certification these two are ot as good as the kitchers guide as they are aimed at a nic contractor and they repeat some of the info so not really worth the extra cash

good luck if you put the effort in you will pass there was 10 who took it when i did 4 passed i was the only one not working so at a disadvantage when it came to the practical as it was first time i had tested 3 phase but through all the study made it easier but alot of them used to turn up saying they hadnt done any revision or very little so its not surprising if they failed

Big thank-you to brucelee. This is the type of info we need, great to know that people care enough to help others out. Like you I've not got much practical experience but that will not hold me/others back. You've mentioned some good books above, I've just put them on my Xmas wish list. How hard is three phase testing? Never even worked on 3 phase, I've mostly done house bashing.

When I called the college up to book my course in Feb, I asked if they need to see my certs as a prerequisite? No need, they replied. No prerequisite for this course but we only enroll people that have a minimum of 2330 l2 and 17th. So I don't think you have any problems mate and its free for you, fill your boots. Costing me ÂŁ650 at Xmas time but it will be worth it in the end.

have a look in that post mate i put a rough guide to the practical there are some other posts in the stickys also
also checkout amberleafs posts he has done loads covering this especially i the section 301 post its also a sticky
mate
three phase is not much harder than single same tests but over three phases

ie for ZE on 3 phase test L1- earthing conductor
L2 - earthing conductor
L3 - earthing conductor
with supply on but the main switch off and CBs off
record the highest as this is the Ze

ah cheers Paul

I got the L2 2330 (currently doing L3) but also im also doing the 17th through the same Course Funding plus the PAT Testing Course so if the L2 2330 and 17th are the minimum requirements then I should be OK as i'll be doing the 2392 first anyways.

hi mate so did i and i have not got 2330 at any level
it cost 450 at bury college plus a extra ÂŁ85 for a optional day the college paid half and leigh skills shop paid 150 so i only had to pay 140 bury have also got a special offer on all there short courses for 2382, 2377,2391-10 etc
you dont have to have anything as a prerequisiite but some ask for 17th or knowledge of whats involved

Sorry brucelee I should have written it better. There is no prerequisite for the 2391 but the training centre that I've signed up to has one of its own. It's a very highly recommend centre and is well known around these parts for being the best place to learn, not just to get a pass on a test. I've got 2 places that do the 2391 within 3 miles of my house. This place is 12 miles away and in rush hour traffic will take an hour each way but its the best and looks great on a cv.

The coding part is all down to experience and knowing whether something is right or wrong. Remember some pics have no faults.
