I'll pm you......
Sorry I should have also replied to brucelee on previous post. The info on the stickys are brilliant. They are going to be used a lot in the next couple of months. This thread is not about taking anything away from the stickys or any other previous threads, its about "students" like me learning from "experts" like you. This is a place where we can ask the stupid questions without fear of being ridiculed in any way. After all its fools that don't ask questions, how will they learn..... How about you (brucelee) set us our first question. Don't make it to hard thu. No one answer it on here, keep the answer with you or send your answer to me via a pm and we will see how we all do. Give the answer out in 24 hours time. What do ya say?

If I can be of any help on this thread, just post up, I do a 2391 revision course for 2 centres and I'm pretty much 'in-tune' with the unique City & Guilds question and answer format!

Excellent, we need a translator for the special language that c&g use. It's great to have someone like you on our side. How about the first lesson tomorrow, say about 18:00 one of you lot post us lot a question and let's get the learning started.

I can't promise 18:00 but certainly sometime tomorrow night!

I wonder if it would be better in the courses forum and maybe a thread per question to make answers and replies easier to follow?

Lenny?

Ill throw in exam prep.......most people fail as they dont answer enough questions. First part just bang through the questions, dont stop. If the answer does not come quick, put teh question number on the page and leave a couple of lines and get stuck into the next question. Sometimes if you are lucky a subsequent question will trigger the answer to a previous one, think from memory you get about 2 minutes per question!

Long answers, use the bullet point method to get the info down then use this to formulate the longer answer. I believe most people know what they are doing, but the problem lies in getting that info onto paper. There are plenty of practice papers out there and the only true way to effectively use them is against the clock.

Graeme that's great advice and its what we are looking for. I've got all the answers in my head but find it hard to put down on paper. You've hit a spot. Good idea to try a past/mock paper with my wife holding the stop watch (she won't let me cheat). Bullet points, I'll try that. I think this may just work..... IQ, I think it may be better to have the daily question in the courses forum like you've said. What do the administrators think?

The bullet points works as a brain storming session before answering the question (mainly the long answers) by getting the info on the paper in brief points, it should trigger more response from the old gray matter and hopefully make answering the question easier. Dont worry about neatness, I got the info on the page for the earth loop question (99% certain) and had plenty of time left when I finished, and redrew the whole lot tidier the second time.............

I'll be happy to help with this.

I've got a lot of reference info and stuff, but I'll have to have a little sort through as some of it is prior the latest GN3 and so I wouldn't want to confuse anyone.
I'll try to get time to post up some questions and practical assessments schedules over the weekend.

Sorry brucelee I should have written it better. There is no prerequisite for the 2391 but the training centre that I've signed up to has one of its own. It's a very highly recommend centre and is well known around these parts for being the best place to learn, not just to get a pass on a test. I've got 2 places that do the 2391 within 3 miles of my house. This place is 12 miles away and in rush hour traffic will take an hour each way but its the best and looks great on a cv.
yes mate probably to make sure the ones that want to do the course are committed to it and not out of there depth

and same here mate i had to drive from leigh to bury in rush hour to go to bury college as it was recommended by a friend i did another course with
we didnt do one past paper during lesson and he only gave us a couple the second to last lesson to do at home
they were just copies of the ones in exam success which i had already done over and over
but its no use just doing past papers it helps by showing you how to answer but a lot are repeated and some of the questions that came up wernt on any of the past papers i have
If its a good course they will cover as much as they can in lesson
but a lot of whats required you will need to read and understand the terminology etc so you can answer how they want it answered
we didnt do any practical during the course I had to pay for a optional day ÂŁ85 where four of us carried out all the tests between us using one test meter bit of a rip off really but good to get a feel of whats required for practical exam
learn how to calculate resistance for different csa and lengths
and then transpose so you can work out the size of the conductor
or the length
learn the difference with max BS7671 100% values compared to the max measured 80% in gn3
the ones in gn3 are the ones you use to compare you test results with for a quick guide
when we want to find Zs we calculate use Zs =Ze + R1 + R2 or measure
calculating gives a more accurate value as measuring will include paralell paths
designers use m/ohm per metre X MF x Length divided by 1000
MF is the multiplying Factor to take into account increase in temp due to the conductor operating temp
eg for 70 c thermoplastic bunched or a core in a multicore such as T/E is 1.2
or you have to use the bs7671 x 0.8 to give you the max measured and then compare to this
learn volt drop max 3% lights 6.9v 5% for power 11.5v single phase
Its basically down to you to learn whats needed the centre can advice and teach what may come up but some of the questions we hadnt covered on the course
take down as much of the info you can during lesson and dont be afraid to ask for the risk of sounding a numpty
I found because i was studying so much at home a lot of what we did i had already learned my self so it made it easier to understand
good luck i will try to help if i can

Thank you for the past paper from earlier this year. I'll be using this as a mock exam with my wife holding the stop watch and no cheating. I'll give it a go in the next couple if days and see where my strong and weak points are. Again Mark cheers for your help :)

Ok, I've posted a quick Part A revision question in the courses section to get things moving!

I have one of the long part b questions I could post if you'd like??

The more the better!

Are we ok using the 'courses' forum and having a thread per question?

I think it'll make it easier to follow answers and suggestions.

Maybe it would be a good idea to have a subforum specific to the 2391 or for the 2391 study group. There seems to be loads of questions about the 2391 and also it would make it easier for people to find all these useful posts in the future.

The coding part is all down to experience and knowing whether something is right or wrong. Remember some pics have no faults.
