guys, has anyone done this recently.would be obliged if you could give me an insight into the course and exam.thanks in advance

the 2392 has only been out about 2years so how can the training centres claim you need to pass tht before you can go on to complete 2391 exam the training centres can only recomemend tht you undertake 2392 as a stepping stone to the 2391 anyone tht tells you different are talkin complete rubbish. the end

If you want pay a training centre lots of money to do the 2391
they would be being very picky and probably not as profitable as they could be if they turned anyone away

Much better for the student if he has a base to launch from by having formal training or experience ,but not necessary as far as I am aware

Young people coming into the trade shouldn't even have heard of the 2391, as they are by no means competent to undertake it.

i think 2392 exam is a good idea if you are happy being a house basher (domestic installer) and 2391 for (commercial and industrial) at the end of the day you take the exam that you are more comfortable:) with in my opinion haveing 2392 or 2391 does not make you a better spark just more employable to employers

From the C&G webb site:
This qualification is intended for experienced personnel working in the electrical industry. Although City & Guilds does not state formal candidate entry requirements, the qualification is not intended for non-qualified electricians and/or those who do not have experience in inspecting, testing and certifying electrical installations.
The Level 3 Certificate in inspection, testing and certification of electrical installations has been developed in association with the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC) and will satisfy the NICEIC's particular requirement that proposed Qualified Supervisors (PQSs) and operatives are conversant with the requirements of BS 7671 for inspection, testing and certification of electrical installations.

From Eversafe Webb site:
2391 – Inspection, Testing & Certification
What is the course about?
This course is focussed on Part 6 of (BS7671) which is about the Inspection & Testing of fixed electrical installations in the UK. Candidates study the Inspection & Testing process in depth using BS7671 and the IET publication "Guidance Note 3" for reference.
Subjects covered include the need for Inspection & Testing, preparation for Inspection & Testing and the selection of appropriate and approved test instruments. Also included will be a comprehensive look at each of the tests and an opportunity to actually carry out some of the main tests relevant to electrical installations.
Will the course teach me how to be an electrician?
The course will not teach you how to be an electrician and you should already have carried out some Inspection and Testing prior to considering enrolment. As a minimum, candidates would be expected to hold a current 17th Edition Certificate and ideally have relevant electrical installation experience prior to being considered for this course.
So what will the course do for you?

  • If you have many years of practical experience of testing but no formal Inspection & Testing Certificates, this course would provide you with a highly sought after qualification recognised throughout the electrical industry. It will also bring you up to date with the current regulations and familiarise you with the current requirements.

  • If you are a fully qualified electrician (having completed a City & Guilds 2360 Parts 1 & 2 or equivalent) then the course will make you eligible to be a recognised electrical inspector which would enable you to take on this role for your employer.
Note:- In order to achieve competent persons status under Part P of the Building Regulations, even with a 2391 Inspection & Testing qualification, you will still be required to register with one of the competent persons scheme providers.
You will also need to demonstrate that your practical skills are adequate and this is done by either the scheme provider checking some of your previous/current work or by you attending a practical based competency test.
Part P of the Building Regulations only applies to dwellings and associated outbuildings. It does not apply to industrial and commercial premises YET!
What will I need if I attend the course?
We recommend that candidates obtain their own copy of the IET Guidance Note 3 as we constantly refer to it during the course. A copy of British Standard BS7671 would also be useful and in practice you should already have a copy if you are carrying out electrical work anyway. However, we can lend you a copy of BS7671 for the duration of the course subject to availability.
You should bring a suitable form of Photo ID with a signature to verify who you are for the City & Guilds registration process.
You should bring pens, pencils, notepad and a calculator.
Candidates may bring their own test meters for practicing the tests but we will check the suitability and safety status of these before you are allowed to use them. You will not be allowed to use your own test equipment for the formal practical assessments.
What is included within the cost of the course?
All our 2391 Inspection, Testing & Certification courses include the tuition fees and City & Guilds practical & written examination fees. The 4-Day course includes a snack lunch and free tea and coffee whereas the evening course just includes the tea and coffee.
Course materials provided will include a course plan with scheme of work, course handouts with exercises and lots of sample examination style questions.
How will I be assessed?
The course is assessed in two ways. During the course you will undertake four practical assessments based upon various Inspection & Testing scenarios. Some time after the end of the course (depending on when you start), you will sit a written examination set by the City & Guilds. The examination dates are fixed by the City & Guilds in advance and we have no control these dates.
Where can I get further information?
If you have any questions you can email us at
[email protected]

Some training providers MAY require you to undertake the 2392 before the 2391 as this would give a basic back ground in testing.

What they must ensure is that they have a reasonably high pass rate as a lot of failures can count against them with C&G.

The 2391 has the highest failure rate of any of the quals in this industry.

So, if you pass the 2392 with flying colours then there is no reason why you dont stand a good chance of passing the 2391.

Looks good on there stats.

What have i been told? i'm not argueing with anyone here. i've simply stated that i've been to a college to enrol for 2391 and been told no if's ,but's or maybe's that if i want to do 2391 in that college i HAVE to do 2392 first. it is you iceman that is telling people in this thread that this type of thing isn't happening when i can tell you for absolute fact that it is.my mate went to enrol yesterday at the same college armed with info i've given him from this very thread thanks to trypod's post above and he was told exactly the same thing as me. so i'll state again for those that are hard of thinking.it may not be city and guilds requirement but some places ARE demanding 2392 before 2391.

just done the 2392-10 and would recommend taking this course prior to 2391 especially if you dont do regular inspection and testing.better to pay or hopefully the company pay to give a very good insight into what lies ahead with the 2391 which is recognised as being hard
