[ElectriciansForums.net] 240v 3 phase plug? Can someone talk me over this one?

Made an error on my order, in my haste i ordered 4 pin 240v 32amp plugs instead of 240v 3 pin 32 amp plugs, but i don't understand their application?

3 phase, 240v? Am i being a total plum here or are these specialist for certain requirements. Clearly marker L1, L2, L3 next to terminals

I've used the plug in question before to supply portable conveyors that plug into a central wall mounted panel. The 240v plug 4 pin plug was for those motors that were being supplied by 240v inverters in the central panel which fed a blue 4 pin socket.....as specified by the factory planning department for easy maintenance of the conveyors.

As the motors are connected 240v Delta the blue plug to blue socket instead of red plug to red socket stopped your general factory worker type blowing the motors up.

This is the exact reason for these plugs. I have used them in similar situations. As you say stops someone plugging a motor into a wrong socket

Wade can you please post more of your cock ups.. its been a good little thread ... if your gonner get it wrong - then do it in style :D

It is a 3ph 230v plug and has the alignment mold to the left as you have photographed it... our 3ph 32amp has the alignment at a different position hence you cant plug this into a 32amp red socket

Oh this is nothing my friend, a simple miss order from TLC, but you wana see cock ups.....then ill show you cock ups.

only thing these get used for very much these days is for fridge/freezer mini vans where they get plugged in overnight to keep the freezer going when parked up....the lorries have a setup with a 3 phase 415Volt and a 230Volt 3 phase connection to suit the supply....

Frozen food shipping containers have this as well, they get powered by a specially designed/shaped long run diesel generator that bolts onto the end for when they are in transit on the container ships, then when the get to where they are going and come off the delivery lorry, they turn off the generator and plug into the mains until the food is emptied out.....the container generator then gets started up again for the container to get sent back empty, or filled with other food for the return journey....from what I've been told the only time the containers get turned off is when they are sent to a company that defrosts them and steam cleans them, apparently if they get allowed to defrost away from a maintenance company they can be damaged and need an expensive repair/refridgerant recharge....
