id be ****ed off if i was op and called in a sparky for advice and were then told they needed a 2 phase supply!

Oh, is this in the zoo then? :)
 
I have come across old arc welders that are connected across 2 lines of a 3 phase supply. One might reasonably argue that a load connected between 2 phases of a UK supply is in fact a single phase 400 volt load, and that a true 2 phase supply with a 90 degree phase angle between phases is virtually unknown these days, at least in the UK
