but then you have to remove the caps to make sure that the screws are stood up like little soldiers

If you convert to M3.5 CS spline capscrews...you can leave them however you like...

left screw @ 20 t0 2. right screw @ 10 to 4. then water will run to the sides of the socket and not straight down.
