Just come back from a job I had to quote to fit smokes on all floors of a large house , and thought easy I'll come of each local light and fit remote bases as the place had just been redecorated ready for letting. Only to find that the light is two plate so No permanant feed at light , this is the reason I think that 3 plate should be the norm and two plate should be used as a secondary way to get you out of trouble with tricky wall lights etc. What do u guys think

Couldn't agree more. Three plate comes out on top time after time, I hate finding lights with neutrals at the switch, as you say it's OK if you're in a hole but I never use it as a preferred method. Three plate gives much more scope for later modification.

I know some councils won't allow the 3 plate system in their properties the lighting has to be wired in double insulated singles or double insulated singles with CPC with the neutral looped at the fitting and lives at the switch

Can't say I have a preference to either system, if I am rewiring an older property with the old metal conduit at the switch drops I normally loop the lives at the switch using double insulated singles

The 3 plate system does make work and create an earning opportunity when a home owner changes a light fitting and screws it up

I wouldn't support a 3 plate only campaign it's like saying you must wire a two way switch by one method only

99% of the time i wire the 3 plate method. Occasions that i use 2 plate are as already mentioned tricky wall lights, main one being the one outside the front door!!!!

Just for my information what councils will not allow 3 plate and what are there legal reason for this, because I can't believe this as it's crazy.

And as far as quoting a metal conduit system this is totally different as no one in there right mind would wire 3 plate , this is more commercial. Where as 3 plate is for twin and earth Wiring and not conduit wiring.

I understand two plate when u have little room to terminate but you have a big whole and a void to push the cables into,, for example down lighters in a bathroom where u have to run an extra cable for the shaver point and a 3 core for the fan , you then have to take 3 core down to the switch.

whats 3 plate and 2 plate? does that mean taking a permanent live and neutral to the switch? i always do that with spots and wall lights, other wise i loop in/out the fitting....
