Discuss 4mm Radial and re-wire Dillema in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

messed Up on the last couple of posts. Getting used to the forum.
The colour code of the house is red and black flat twin and earth.

Is it still a legal requirement even if sockets are just added to the circuits?

Yes there is outside power which is fed from the downstairs radial 4mm 32amp rcbo.

I just presumed a full rewire would be necessary with the age of cables and also that the whole house is being renovated however I appreciate its a lot more work than probably nevessary and from reading these posts about report the work to BC I feel I could be getting myself tangled up because I’m not 100% brushed up on part p regs or even 17th edition as it’s not a required qual in my area of work. Do I have to careful with heights of sockets etc?

Heights of sockets are a mute point ........... as far as I read the rules they only apply to new builds .....................but some BCO's insist on them...........

PS the 18th Edition is coming in this year...........

It is horses for courses; I wouldn't feel confident nowadays, doing any industrial work, without being supervised, even though that's all I did 33 years ago.

Only you know if your competent enough to do domestic work. Have a look round the forum, do some searches and become more familiar with it. :)

Yes, 2.5 with 20 mcb is fine. I do most my house rewires in radial, one for the kitchen, one for down stairs and another for upstairs. We are using less power now in the energy saving world. Not all of the 11 sockets will be used at the same time continuously. You could have 50 sockets and end up using 2. Rcbo seem more practical as with a split load it will turn off more circuits.

Testing is the only way to be certain.
I can't completely agree with that statement. There is a reason inspection comes first in the phrase inspection and testing - it's because it is inherently far more important than testing. Testing merely supplements the inspection. So just because test equipment does not show any issue with cables (much of which is probably concealed in containment or the building fabric or buried or whatever) does not mean that they are necessarily in a safe condition.
