I’m going to say it because there’s a lot of troops to back me up. James Stuart must have felt like this during the resurrection of the monarchy.

Short curse are an anathema to our beloved trade
The ones that came though the first version were tradesmen in their own right. Amongst them are close friends.
Now any bugger with ÂŁ500 burning a hole in their pocket can call themselves an electrician.

It makes me sick to my stomach to see how things have gone now.

An electrician was a “GOD” in the community.
Look at the state you’re in now

No but with a few other things - 2392 (basic testing), 2377 (PAT testing) and 2393 ("part P") they bump it up to that.
For ÂŁ5k you might even get a laminated card with your photo on at the end of it.
What's the purpose of the thread though?

The purpose of the thread is to register my disgust at the way you’ve let a once proud trade go.

A plumber has more respect in the community than you lot.

No I don’t want a gold card! The JIB have been a joke in all the forty five years I’ve been an electrician.

Although nowhere near being perfect, i would strongly disagree with that statement!! They have at the very least, set and stood by what is accepted as the minimal qualifications and experience a JIB/SJIB carded electrician requires. You won't find any electrical trainee's or 17 day whizzers holding gold cards or any other card stating they are an electrician....

For how long is that going last!!!!! I think it will only be a matter of time money speaks volumes which is why we are where we are

Who knows, they have managed to stand their ground since the JIB/SJIB's inception, i can't really seeing anything changing anytime soon either.

As far as i'm aware they have always increased the requirements for each category of electricians grading, never known them to lower them. Be bloody grateful that there is still a body that refuses point blank to accept these chancers into the workplace, as anything but labourers!!

I have liked your post as I agree with the 1st part but the JIB until now have stood back and said ******** you have not got the required grades in required courses so you are not getting recognised by us. This stance has created tons of resentment from the very people who the say NO to. I would also say that the Electrical Trainee ect probably don't even know who the JIB are....
Also your post comes across as if it is "our" fault.....well If you are in the industry then it is also YOUR fault lol.
I have my views on why we are where we are....and they include decline in unions and bogus self employment and the scam providers and finally the numpties who provide these short courses. ALL of these have led us to where we are.

Not really, it's so far not affected the real industrial sector, especially the heavy industrial maintenance sector.

It is to a greater extent the fault of the journeyman electricians and those that are one man bands who have just accepted all these detrimental changes, without raising any form of protest and are now feeling the cost of doing nothing. The only real course of action now, is the creation of a Registry for Qualified Electricians, that covers ALL sectors of the industry. It will put a stop the wannabes, the need for Scams, and the short course trainers at a stroke if allowed too!! But i can see that they will probably give the wannabes a lay time to gain sufficient minimal qualifications etc, to gain registration...

I agree to a certain extent I am also in the industrial sector. The problem with our sector is dumbing down the installs in the name of progress. Not "really" in heavy industry but it is still there to a certain extent....These types of modular installs have buggered up the big commercial jobs. Deskilling is rife mate. You have mates that do all containment and even wiring with one spark in charge of 10 mates as an example. So the issues are similar with pay and standards slipping. As said to get a JIB gold card is still the same as always. The trouble is the way the big companies have slipped in the installer grade by the back door...as it is actually happening on site. The Glasgow Southern General hospital being a case in point....all modular install through the whole job. Done by mainly "mates" and also SJIB sparks working for a SJIB firm for less than the rates...no union representation nothing.....
If anybody thinks these modular installs are a good thing then they could have a good laugh at the end result on the above job. Tons of faults at the end of the job. Apparently some of the modular kit came on site with faults and was installed anyway by the "mates". If this is progress them im a dutchman haha.
