Hi. I never post on here but felt that I need to ask a question. Im doing a job. I asked him if he wanted a price upfront but he said no whatever it is it is. This is the list of what ive done.
- Changed 8 skts
- Changed 8 lt sw
- Wired 3 lts and sw in cupboard
- wired and fitted 7 downlts
- wired 3 extra skts and 2 spurs
- relocated a tv point
- put a new back box in
I was there for 24 hours and used ÂŁ50 Diesel. I woyld like to know how much you would charge?

24 times your hourly rate that you expect as a minimum which would include allowance for P.L insurance, tools, vehicle depreciation, non paying customers etc, plus materials plus fuel costs.

Whatever you charge, you may be in for a bit of a discussion with your customer about it.

The conversation will start, How much? I just wanted a few sockets changed.

As said, you really need to set a figure before you do the job, even if it is a bit of an overquote. Does the guy know the going hourly rate for sparks? If he does then you should have no problems. If it's all down on an invoice he can see the breakdown of charges and can't argue. In theory!

You really dragged your heals a bit here didn't you - I would be looking at that in 1 maybe 1 and half days and a charge of about ÂŁ500 including materials.

You really need to work out your hourly rate and your day rate before you do anymore work and have it in your T&Cs on a sheet or your website where customers can see it and you can refure to it.

If you have it on a sheet then hand it to the customer before work starts, if its on your website make sure the link is clear and then you can relay on customers seeing it before you start work

I would say ÂŁ850 + materials. Forget diesel etc, as that should be built into an hourly rate. Whatever you charge, don't budge, as that just looks like you are trying it on in the first place.
He gave you carte blanch to "do what needs doing".... so be it.

What are your overheads per year, what would you like to earn per year? where in the UK are you?

The above is irrellevant IMO the op should charge a fair amount for works done covering his materials bill, fuel, time, tax, certificate and notification fees and profit.

why is the op concerned as the customer may just pay you what your bill is

So how can what I said be irrelevent? "overheads" are what you outlined plus things like your insurance. If you don;t know what your overheads or costs are, how can you set your hourly rate?

at a guess 25 ph x 24 = 600 + 50 deisel + overheads percentage+ materials + vat
your overhead percentage would depend on how many jobs you plan on doing in a year averaged out pluss tool replacement van insurance tax upkeep and a million other things that could go on.
how much would you charge for a complete rewire? what percentage of a total rewire would you say you have done?
rough guess 1350+ vat

7 downlights could take a full day, moving bed/s, bedroom furniture, carpet up, floor up, drill joists, cable up, terminate with line products ( or similar ) and H/R flex. i'd say 2 days minimum for the whole job, including testing, so 24 hours ain't too bad.
