Hi. I never post on here but felt that I need to ask a question. Im doing a job. I asked him if he wanted a price upfront but he said no whatever it is it is. This is the list of what ive done.
- Changed 8 skts
- Changed 8 lt sw
- Wired 3 lts and sw in cupboard
- wired and fitted 7 downlts
- wired 3 extra skts and 2 spurs
- relocated a tv point
- put a new back box in
I was there for 24 hours and used ÂŁ50 Diesel. I woyld like to know how much you would charge?

no one has mentioned time filling in forms, inspection and testing before and afterwards whether it was done over 1 day 2 or three, any chance of more work off customer did the house smell! all i would factor in on a job.

You really dragged your heals a bit here didn't you - I would be looking at that in 1 maybe 1 and half days and a charge of about ÂŁ500 including materials.

You obviously know the layout and difficulty of the OP's job then or else you would not be able to comment the way you have. There is more than one way to complete a job and there are still some customers who prefer quality to a "lashed in" cheap job. The other side of the coin may have been moving furniture and carpets to get access which if the customer is prepared to pay for you to do it go for it

That is why due to the lack of info in the OP it is difficult to pluck a price out of the air all jobs will take as long as they take I dare say we have all had that 8 hours quoted job that's taken 4 and a similar job that has taken 12, we don't whether it is a two up two down or a multi bedroomed detached house the only person who can decide if heels were dragged is the OP

500 including materials is a joke! it has to be,
7 x fire rated downlights ÂŁ70 maybe led bulbs
13 sockets average 2.50 each = ÂŁ32.50
9 swiches= ÂŁ10 min
3 lights maybe pendant= ÂŁ5.00
already up to ÂŁ117 call it ÂŁ120
that leaves ÂŁ380 for 24 hours work
15.88 ph before tax ni running costs etc cable, deisel and a million other things.
nick i would expect your on minnimum wage after all taken into account

as the op hasn't responded i am wondering if it is a customer looking at what he will get charged?
I would say from the title it looks like the OP has done the work, put in the invoice and got told, "you are ripping me off".

Always agree an upfront ball park figure at the very least.

If the OP feels he has worked sensibly and not delayed then that is how long it took and that is the period of time for which you should charge, however this is one thing with which I have problems, since there is an amazing range of times in which different people feel a job should be completed.
A range of one to three days for a job seems almost impossible variation in speed.
Having said that all jobs are different in nature and unfortunately you never know the specifics until you start work.

Thanks for the reply guys. Great help just new to working myself. The job was a bit of a nightmare and customer kept on adding extra work onto job. In future I will be giving price up front to save any problems.

When you give a price up front, make sure you note what is included so that at the end and extras have been added it'll make the conversation easier with the client. If the job is going on over several days, when they ask for extras make sure you reply stating they are extras too.
