Thanks tuckermot,
If i start at college
its going to take me 4years to become an electricain that will take me to 47 (i think time is running out):(
I was thinking of doing a 6week course

Hi Rudeboy

To be honest mate the industry is really dead at the moment, and will be for at least another year or so. Doing a 6 week course won't guarantee you a job with any electrical firm. You cannot and will not become an electrician in 6 weeks, there are time served electricians out there fighting for sparks mates jobs.
It really is abysmal.

There are thousands and thousands of people doing these 6 week courses hoping to become an electrician, but at the end they are sitting without work, because they are in competition with better qualified sparks. It simply is not the time to get into the industry.

If you want some advice do the college route, it will take 3 years, but you will be a lot better trained and therefore more attractive to employers.

Good luck anyway!:D

Hi Rudeboy,

Welcome to the site. I myself have not been on here long but can give you some advice.

I went to college three years ago to start my 2330 on Saturdays. I am 47 now
I was not in the trade but do some work on site as I do CCTV.

I have just finished my 2330 level 3, my 17th edition, Part "P"and I am taking my 2391 test & inspetion at the end of the month.

In my view the college route is the correct one, but only as good as the college/tutor based there.

I was very lucky, because I had great tutors, but I still had to put in vast amounts of extra work.

You will come out after three years with knowledge of many subjects most of which you will forget befoe you have to use them, and with very little practical experience.

What is the use of power factor correction if you can't get on site!!

I know many other people in my college who always got 90%+ in exams but would kill you on site once they started wiring up circuits.

I made many great friends and contacts at college, but nothing that I was taught would be helpfull when pulling in cables and fixing containment. ( most of the basic tasks you will be asked to perform when starting out).

If you can afford it try to get on to one of the condensed courses, with companies like Able skills of Prospects.

These type of companies are not fly by night, but have a full years course working through school holidays.
By this you can cut down the course time sometimes by a year.

With regards to getting work, The CV route does not work at the moment. As you have been told 2391 Sparkies are fighting for everything at the moment, so you won't get a look-in.

Most of the companies will not even speak to you after you tell them you do not have a testing qualification.

Talk to friends, or anyone who has a connection on site. This will be your best chance to get work or training at the moment.

Also Do you have other skills Data or Cat5/Cat6 experience that could go side by side that would make an employer want you rather than someone else.

Good Luck in your quest

Cheers

With the way that the economic climate is at the moment with the rising again of unemployment it is not the time to change any employment if the are already skilled personnel out there without jobs.

well you have to days off a week, if possible i would ring around everywhere offering your services for free. then maybe two months down the road ask if there would be prepared to put u through college.

this is what i did i was 25 at the time and worked really hard for a fortnight then i was offered an apprenticeship starting on £7.50 an hour which i thought was loads because before that i was working in a chocolate factory on £4.65 i think. i had very little alternitives as i was living with my parents who decided to move away so really had to knucle down.

also my brother worked 2-7 as a delivery drive and worked for free for a whole year as a plumber.

you will learn much more from being onsite and if your willing to work for free (experience is priceless) people are more likely to take notice.
