Hi Guys,

I've just fitted an Bosch Induction hob and its not working, I have run 6mm cable from CU with a 32amp breaker, I have power to the cooker connection unit, but. . . . once I flick the breaker, my RCD on the CU trips.
I have tested the wiring and the Neg is showing as live also, but only when the hob is connected??

The hob is out the box and i'm now fighting currys for a replacement. Can anyone help shed some light on this problem just so I have some info before tearing into Currys and Bosch.

Many Thanks

a couple of years ago,
I fitted a cooker for someone.
like you the RCD tripped.
I told the customer that it was a faulty item

the shop (I can't remember who it was) said I was a cowboy and I dangerously overloaded the electrics

I put a lead and 13amp socket on the end and tested the cooker, and so proved it was there kit that was faulty.
Do you have PAT testing equipment?
if you do, put some flex and 13amp plug on it and test the item

Hi mate,

I dont have any PAT testing gear, there sending a tech out friday, but I wanted to make sure I have as much info as possible in case they try and give me the fob off, bloody hob has cost me ÂŁ600 and its just out the box. It can only be a fault in the hob seeing as when its connected, its making the neutral live?

Ok. . update. . i've just connected the hob to the cooker connection and its working, i have also changed the MCB over and they are ok, so my question is. . WTF is going on, I have tested the supply from the CU and there is power going to the connection live is live and neutral isnt, once I connect the hob, it trips and the neutral is also live. . confused aint the word???

Cheers guys

Disconnect the power supply and connect your test meter to the hob line and neutral and perform a continuity test a very low reading will indicate a short between L an N when the hob is turned on. Performthe same test for L and PE and for good measure Test between N and PE cables. There should be a large resistance reading between N and PE and the same for L and PE. Hope this helps

Had a similar experience with a faulty double-pole switch where one side was making/breaking faster than the other, causing an imbalance to the RCD.

Also, there could be cumulitive earth leakage causing the RCD to trip-try it with just that circuit energised.

I don't really understand what you mean by 'neutral being live' etc.

Induction hobs don't really seem to get along with RCDs at the best of times.....

Hi Guys,
The induction hob will trip the RCD as it has to generate a magnetic field to get the induction loop working generating a back emf - this will cause some RCDs to trip. Try with out the RCD if poss and if the hob works put in a different RCD that is recommended for high induction loads - sometimes just changing the RCD works

Thanks guys,

I've sat down and started from the beginning and I found the fault. The other 'spark' who fitted the MCB didnt connect it up right at the CU, he wired the N to the wrong side!!! :19: Moral of the story, dont let the monkey do the organ grinding. Cheers for your help.
