Hi

Well after being used by the last company I worked for (ESG) the Electrical Safety Group I decided to tell the Boss I would be leaving. He wasn't to bothered and neither was I to be honest as they are a bit shady and use scare tactics to get work. any work the do get is massively over priced and I felt as tough I would end up being on that show rouge traders.

I managed to save 1100 pounds whilst there and have decided that I am going to join elecsa and look for and take on my own work. hopefully anyway.

Ive got all my hand tools and drills along with steps and other general bits and bobs but the main thing I now need is a tester, I was thinking of going the second hand route just so I can get going as that will leave a bit of money in case I need to make any purchases tools wise to take on a job (eg meter long drill bit)

At college I used a megger
although most of the electricians I have worked for used fluke

I think I will go for a fluke but its not 100 percent

I know a lot of guy don't think the new meggers are as good as the old ones. what megger would be the one to go for if I decided to get a megger.

Is it ok to go the second hand option Is there anything I need to look out for.

any help is much appreciate

The 1552 would be more than adequate for you fella, around 250 notes and you will have a quality tester which should last years.

Check fleabay for a test kit. Can't comment on Megger as I am a Fluke junkie myself.

A valid calibration cert is always a good bench mark for 2nd hand gear. Also check the leads are not knackered or that will be another 50-100 squid.
Oh, and check it hasn't been knicked or the next time you get it calibrated it may come up as stolen!

I bought a Metrel 61557 second hand £180 off ebay??? But I had it calibrated, it has sailed through three more since with no bother. Comes with a padded bag to protect it, rugged and accurate. Trip lock tends to slightly high readings. It just keeps working, touch wood!
