Just fitted a 17th edition CU in a clients house.

the old cu was a metal clad old style, the house electrics have had extensive DIY work by the previous owner, had nothing but problems fitting this, RCD kept tripping, circuits not working etc, pain in the arse, various circuits with incorrect size cables, and about 4-5 wires in one 32 breaker as the previous owner has ran 'spurs' for there.

could not pick up a continuity reading as the tester kept going to 2000.
could only get reading from certain circuits at approx 1.58

In my opinion seeing the installation state id say its a disaster waiting to happen, and a rewire would be most appropriate.

Client would rather not rewire and i cannot think of any alternative, solutions??

What??? You have stated RCD was tripping on old DB, yet you went on and fitted a new full RCD/RCBO board regardless, I know you did not carry out IR tests but what did you expect to happen there? Also if I understand what you are saying there is earth continuity problems too. Those radials could have been reallocated as individual circuits. Alternative for you is to run for the hills and get a sparky in who knows what's what!

Where's GLENNSPARK when you need him :24:

banned for a week.

seriously ? if so this is getting daft , come on mods we have got to be able to have an intense debate, that's the idea of the forum surely.
If Glenn's not banned ignore my comment

hey were,
it was ment to be a straight forward board change but turned into a 6 hour job, the board has not got a RCD installed at the moment - as client wanted elec back on

How long did you expect it to take?? I always allow 1 working day PLUS extras

EDIT: What did your schemes technical line suggest??

Oh dear, call the police its completely ilegal and this whole post must be erradicated from the history of man kind. I'm actually in shock and have now refused to continue living in such a rubish world.
Come on, we all make mistakes, the guys just fitted a board before testing, he hasnt murdered anyone or committed genocide in some sort of war crime..... oh no the sky may fall in and the whole world will self destruct......just talk to your client, tell them there's some faults to rectify, say you feel responsible cos you should have tested first and charge half price to find and fix.

What a pathetic attempt at trying to justify the opening post, it stinks end of, how the heck can you try to justify it lmao, hilarious.

Maybe pathetic but not in the same league as perhaps starting hilarious spoof threads perhaps. Its not for me to justify what someone else does, as its not my problem… the guys got himself into a mess to put it politely, as we' ve all done at some time or another… but hey its not the end of the world is it.

The fact he didn't test isn't the issue, although I can't see why anyone changing a board can't disconnect the existing cabling from the existing board then do the dead tests before actually changing to the new board, but hey thats not the end of the world as you say, the fact he came here and started crying because the rcds wouldn't hold and asked what he could do is the issue, an that is pathetic. I have to ask whether he should be replacing the board at all under those circumstances, anyhow whatever, at least my house has energised circuits, I feel for the poor sod who has no electric this morning due to the opening poster, poor so and so, I hope he or she isn't a pensioner and got cold last night.
