alternatives?

Just fitted a 17th edition CU in a clients house.

the old cu was a metal clad old style, the house electrics have had extensive DIY work by the previous owner, had nothing but problems fitting this, RCD kept tripping, circuits not working etc, pain in the arse, various circuits with incorrect size cables, and about 4-5 wires in one 32 breaker as the previous owner has ran 'spurs' for there.

could not pick up a continuity reading as the tester kept going to 2000.
could only get reading from certain circuits at approx 1.58

In my opinion seeing the installation state id say its a disaster waiting to happen, and a rewire would be most appropriate.

Client would rather not rewire and i cannot think of any alternative, solutions??

I think the fact that he thought that 6 hours to do it and do some investigation was far too much is the most scary fact!

why oh why... i asked myself the same question.

the job was under a tight deadline to complete and continuity was carried out before hand,
but everything was already been taken a part, so carried on with the job.

I know the old school will not be so forgiving! haha

What about Insulation Resistance testing mate, a real basic balls up on your part no sympathy whatsoever , oh by the way 2000 and 1.58 what, potatoes?

locate and rectify the faults... the whole bloody house electrics are one big fault!

It may not be quite as bad as it seems...

Sort the defects (if you're lucky, a day's work unpaid), put it down to experience and move on with the full intention of pretesting before CU changes in the future.

I have to ask whether he should be replacing the board at all under those circumstances.

The thought of a quick $ dictated the board must be changed.

Pre testing and covering your ar$e with pricing obviously isn't something you're taught in the 5day 'become an electrician, part p, buy a qualification' course then???
If you don't have the experience or common sense to 'suss' out an installation when you first arrive on site, I question whether you should be carrying out the job at all.
As it has been said before, you've dropped a ------- , made an --- of yourself, left yourself wide open and the install unsafe.
There is no alternative, you'll have to put it right.
If you had any common sense or experience you'd know, whether a 'rewire' is required or not, wouldn't be in question... It'll either be something you can put right with alterations and improvements, or it'll need a complete rewire. If you can't decide on that, after carrying out CU change and being onsite for 6hrs, you really are in the wrong job...

You need an Insulation Resistance Test at 1,000 Volts for a full five minutes between your right ear and you left --------.

It will help you to remember the importance of testing before you start buggering about and making a complete pratt of your self.

Pretty unfortunate you replaced the DB then I would say, so whats your next plan of action to rectify this if the client won't pay for remedial works then?
