I think the OP could do with re-taking his English grades nothing more off-putting to the customer then basic spelling mistakes, as an Electrician you will be looked at by the average customer as a person skilled and educated .... but show them the spelling mistakes you made in you title and opening post and they will lose all confidence in you and this applies to employers etc... i would be spell checking any applications you submit or you could have wasted a stamp, this isn't a dig at you but a reality check on what its like in the real world and trust me when i say i wouldn't even entertain the idea of giving an interview to someone who's application has basic spelling errors.

I know a labourer that got a sparkys card from sjib after just 5 years labouring what a joke on his first job doing a refurb on a burnt down hotel he attempted to wire 60 low voltage lights supplied from 1 x 1.5 t&e so my guess anyone can have one.
So much for safety

well things have changed since i was at college, lets put it like this, would you want some one with no qualifications in testing and inspection testing your car when you take it for an MOT?would you trust that the car was safe to take out a public road?
its ok having a licence to drive (nvq3+17th edition)but what about the work you are turning out who verifys the installation?
so lets all not bother with 2391 then.
I will stick to the nappitts and niceic requirments they came to our college and asked us to join the scheme but we had to be gaining or in the process of gaining the 2391.
so get on with it, and hopefully your are designing and verifying your installations safely, but dont come crying to me if you electrocute or burn someones house down.

That's irrelevant the question asked was 'what was required' be it adequate or not. You gave incorrect information to the original poster

Personally I think your right, 2391 or the new equivalent should be required to test and sign off any work through a scheme or not. But that isn't the case so telling people that its against the law to run a business without it is ridiculous.

the 2391 is a way of demonstrating competence in Inspecting and Testing. If one of your installations were ever to develop a fault, you might be required to stand up and explain to a judge. For some of the older fellas that maybe have never been taught testing, but picked it up from GN3 ect, then they may well struggle to demonstrate competence to a judge.

Experience is also no answer here, as you could of been making mistakes for 30 years. Modern day C&G electrical installation courses do teach inspection and testing, but its not in much depth, hence the high failure rate of 2391.

I also think that having extra qualifications helps you to get jobs. Even if you run your own company, one day you may be required to work for somebody else again.

Just for the record I don't run my own company nor sign anything off I'd, for my own piece of mind if nothing else, want the inspection and testing cert to back me up

NICEIC requirements are not to have 2391

electromotive posts are all factually incorrect.

Any decent course at college NVQ C&G teaches inspection and testing

Many years ago when i got '2392-10 Fundamental Inspection, Testing and initial verification' it covered fundamental inspection, testing and initial verification.

All work installed should be tested. With such a high % of people NOT having 2394/2395/2391 does this mean they all need to work supervised to install.

According to JIB you can be an electrician without /2394/2395/2391 . Does this mean they are electricians but can not test and inspect there own work.

There are 2 electricians in the firm i work for who install only. I do the testing and subsequent fault finding if they make mistakes. They would both admit that they dont know how to test, and most definately dont know how to interpret the test results.
Our company rules that to test you need 2391.

Are they electricians if they can not test?

theyb are both qualified ie,C&G tech certs + NVQ3. If you are not an electrician if you cant test, then over half of electricians i have seen on big jobs would not be electricians.
On the one hand i want a highly skilled and competent workforce, but on the other selfish side, it makes people like myself look better because we have skills that are in more demand becauseof the lack of skill by others.

Unfortunately people learn to pass exams, and not to further their knowledge in the trade. Most people are happy as long as they pass.
