Hi everyone,

I was called out to a house yesterday to fit a new 2 gang dimmer switch.
When got there the customer had installed on 1 circuit throughout the whole down stairs, over 100 x 50w / 230v down lighters onto a 6 amp circuit. Quick clac suggests this as being over 5000w/ 230 = 22Amps.

Would like your thoughts please.

Cheers guys

I recently bought a line 6 amplifi 75 which is cracking.
works through iPad/iPhone with some nice tones in there and intuitive to edit as well.
cant see a gigging musician using it but for the money a nice bit of tackle.
unfortunately due to a workload that would choke a donkey I've used it all of 4 times in the last three months.

Bet he only has 16mm back boxes and he has tried and unable to get the dimmer in !!

Yes, that is exactly why I was asked to install the dimmer switch. Old cable with no cpc, wooden back boxes and have found burnt insulation. Its to bright for him now he has wired up 100+ lights and after I explain Ohms law as simply as possible, the guy was then sure that the dimmer switch would turn the amps down and make it safe.

Due to unbelievable volume I've not used my Marshall very much recently either.

I was rummaging about in the loft the other day shifting some of ex-wife's cack and stumbled across my old Selmer Constelation 20 that I last used in '73 (ish) when the transformer caught alight.

I've found (online) a bloke down in Nottingham who restores old valve amps so phoned him and asked if he could do anything with it, so when I'm feeling a bit better I'm planning on taking it to him & getting it fixed.

God knows why though since I have no thoughts about playing again.

Incidentally, did you ever use Burman gear??

My dream bass amp when growing up was an Acoustic 320 with a 408 cab, the cab was bloody enormous. If I'd ever gotten it I reckon I'd have put my back out. I borrowed a Burman Bass combo years ago, it was fantastic. I also had a Darco 50 watter that was gigged extensively with a Carlsboro bass bin, they could cope with pretty much anything. I still love my Ohm GA125 for bass, it's got an 8 band graphic on it which I set up in a smile shape. Not much mid range but plenty top for punchiness and bottom end for....well you can't really play bass without bottom end can you.
For lead stuff the Marshall is flippin great
An old school mate sold a load of old toy cars and bought himself a second hand Selmer set up and an entry level Strat. No idea why, he couldn't play to save his arse. It'll be nice when you get it going Fatha, I'll bet you'll be plugging in if only for a little noodle about on it.

i dont understand people that do that.

i played a second hand flute for nearly 10 years, it was good enough to get me to grade 5 but passed that it wasnt as responsive and harder to play than a newer model.

your better sticking to one instrument for a couple years before changing, i wouldnt go back to my old one now ive got a nice trevor james catabile 3 but i am going to start guitar again soon i think.

a beginer cant usually tell the difference between the models because a lot of differences are subtle

I was in my early 20s before I could afford my first brand new, good quality guitar. Before that I'd played a variety of copies or old buggered originals, all of which were pretty poor quality. When I first got something decent my playing took off in leaps and bounds

thats the thing though, i have never played a mass produced flute.

when you get passed step-up grade there all hand finished as a minimum.

same with guitars really, there all slighly different, i miss my old guitar.

parents sold it because i didnt have time to play it, i was doing music gcse, band practise, flute lessons and the odd band organised concert a couple times a year.

the amount of time you spend playing and not getting anywhere is amazing, it used to take me over an hour to play through all my music lesson pieces.

The vast majority of my theoretical music knowledge has been self taught. Probably took me a lot longer this way (and probably left massive gaps) but I found lessons dull. I was at a level which I was being held back from by the teacher. When you can play Cat Scratch Fever at 13 do you really want to be playing Go And Tell Aunt Nancy The Old Grey Goose Is Dead?
I bloody didn't :)

to be honest mate i chose the pieces i liked and only did them to get the grade.

im qualifed at level4 in music performence and when i start lessons again ill take level5.

pieces like prelude by john rutter are really nice pieces to play, turkish rondo is another nice one.

im glad i took the lessons now because as long as there are less than 5 flats/sharps in the key signiture i can pick it up and play it

this is one of my favorite to play

a lot of people dont like playing wind instruments because you need to control breathing and get it exactly to the score and add your own little touches

That name "Darco" brings back some memories!!.. Absolute heid th' ball.

I don't know why I'm thinking of getting the Selmer fixed TBH ....It must be an "age related thing" I'm not likely to be gigging again but I have an idea that I'd like to meet this John Chambers bloke in person. He's no youngster & has been building & renovating valve amps since the '60's and we've had some interesting chats on the phone He's somewhere near Nottingham and I just sort of fancy having a blast down there when I'm a bit better.

Meanwhile ... yet another appointment with the vet next week and another CT scan on the same day. Happy ****in days!!!
