A continuity of protective conductor test is required to be carried out using an instrument that has not been used for some time. State
a) one visual check to be conducted on the instrument (1 mark)
b) two instrument tests to be carried out to ensure correct operation. (2 marks)

check for calibration

short leads out (zero)
battery test

again what i would do but is it the correct answer

A visual check to ensure the instrument and leads are intact and safe to use.....

11 a) State the effect on measured values of insulation resistance of a 230V circuit if an insulation resistance test is carried out
i) between live conductors to earth with a tungsten lamp in circuit (1 mark)
ii) between live conductors with a switched fused connection unit, having a neon indicator, left in the off position. (1 mark)
b) State the test voltage to be applied to the circuit in a) i) above. (1 mark)

0.00 Mohms
0.25 Mohms no wrong in off would be >500Mohms
500v dc

the first is incorrect...you are testing between live conductors and earth....a lamp in the circuit will make no difference....Also they are not asking for readings, they are asking what effect the items listed will have on the test.

Are you suggesting that having a load in circuit will create a short circuit between Live conductors and Earth?

...as wirepuller has just said :freak: however I was trying to get you to discover it yourself..

Also, it says state the effect ie 'no effect' or 'low insulation resistance reading' etc. it doesn't ask for the reading.

This is where reading the question twice plays a massive part or easy marks are just thrown away.

Avery good point. The answers are worded, not numeric..

You can get a lot of help on here....but I think you need to have a bit of a think about it,stating that you are 10 times the electrician than some of the guys who passed first time when you have failed 3 times is not going to gender a lot of support. Maybe if you rethink you will realize your results mean you dont know as much as you seem to think.
Milk the knowledge on here which will be gladly given if you ask in the right way.

I got through 2391 last summer (first time of trying - he sez smugly!) and found three things helped me most (and apologies if the other guys have already put them down and I missed them) ...

1 GN3 - already mentioned several times, I know - but worth repeating - read it cover to cover..

2. Exam Success Inspection & Testing 2391-10 IEE City & Guilds Jonathan Elliott & Mark Coles (thank you, guys) - which is basically sample question papers and 'ideal answers'

3. There are a few websites you can finding with Google that have old exam papers and questions.

Oh, one more - somewhere on the C&G website you can find The Examiner's Report (or some similar title) that goes through last year's paper and comments on what people did wrong. Good luck!

gap30, in my opinion you have done the most difficult part, that is asking for help.
As previously said take a breather and then do some serious studdying I am sure this time, it will be your time.
Good luck-happy reading!!!

Perhaps a little patience and take smaller steps
Publishing numerous questions that may be troubling you and getting an answer will not help you much

Perhaps picking a question as a subject of debate, where you can give your answer as you would in the exam and an explanation of why you think the answer is correct
There could be critisism made of your answer, why that answer may be wrong or views on how you construct the answer that will maximise the marks available

Flapping about not having passed will get you nowhere, whats past is past, your previous methods or assessment of your standard was wrong and you have done well to ask for assistance
You wont get better and more friendly help than you will find off some of the lads on this forum

I am still waiting my result, I think I got the Vd question right.
Revision, revision, revision, I put aside 3 days to revise before the exam.
Terminology is important, GN3 has them all but don't ignore the BRB some questions from it as well.
C&G's can't keep churning out the same questions because we all do past papers, so expect a few curve balls.
I doubt I'd have the resolve/stamina to take it a second time, it was the most stressed I've been for an exam, so good luck.

The proof was in the pudding on the answers i gave, i need to start from the bottom up and you are all correct i need to read the question properly:bomb:

Has anyone suggested the 2392?! ...and why not, even if you progress onto the 2391, you'll still have the 2392 and consequently will make your CV just that little bit longer/better!

no its got to be the 2391, i have been looking through some previous exams tonight and i really need to get my head into the books and give this 110%
