Discuss another bit if my work so far, studying since Oct 2013 in the Electrical Course Trainees Only area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi chris, a lot wrong there m8, I know your training so will be gentle. The sockets in the garage should have been tubed in plastic conduit really, the sticky pads are not designed for 230 volt power cables and that is dangerous IMO, Not now but in 2 weeks time when it all falls off, next the wiring to the downlighter, I don't like exposed cabling like that M8, that should be enclosed in a JB or preferably a Wago box so only the grey cable is showing, next the twin and earths entering the lightswitches are crossed and not clipped properly, I would have had 2 stuffing (TRS) Glands myself where the 2 cables entre side by side and clips side by side. Your a good lad and doing well, just a few pointers for the future fella.

Mike

I appreciate it Mike, next time when I'm told to do any if this I'll keep what you did in mind but at the time it was the first time I'd ever done any of this and was never left alone, always supervised and i just did what was told, like I said I couldn't say no it's wrong because I didn't know it was
He did the first light and i copied and i did the next 4 or 5 just like I was told
Hopefully as I learn what's right and wrong I can say no it's wrong we need to do it like this but when I'm training I'd actually believe a QS should know how's it done
It just makes me think now what I am being told in the the world, is it right or not?

Thanks for your comments

I knew your wasn't, I agreed and says I thought it should be too, I just copied his first one that's all, he said do it like this so I did

Always keep a pair of glasses handy.

If you don't have them to hand you won't use them, if you drill at your feet into steel etc then you wont need them but you will if drilling above head.

Don't feel like you shouldn't wear them just because the others don't.

Remeber it only takes one small accident to lose sight or an eye

ÂŁ3 or so from screwfix

It may seem trivial, and some people choose not to wear personal protective equipment for whatever reason, but it is actually a legal requirement under the PPE regulations, and this is enforced as part of the health and safety at work act. So you could get prosecuted for endangering yourself, or dismissed for gross misconduct if you don't comply. I know that some PPE is uncomfortable at times, but it is not nearly as uncomfortable as having an accident that you could have avoided.

Cheers..........Howard

when training we are relying on being taught how to do things the correct way , always good
to Ask questions mate , you certainly should not be shown to install the light the way you have.

That's what I thought, but now I've been told how it should be done it's in my head and I'll know for next time
I just need to find a master of the trade and have him/her teach me all they know!!! The correct way!

I can understand that Chris of course and anyone in your postition would do exactly the same. I would love to have a chat to your supervisor who told you to connect a downlighter like that, can you get him to join the forum so we can hammer him?

That's the thing Mike, he needs to know he's doing it wrong because until he does he will keep installing them like that on every job, the job looked the part once the glass that held the light in place was put in, but unprotected wires like that is a no no

When you are speaking about the twin and earth entering the light switches I think you are talking about my college work?
If so when looping in at the switches we had 3 twin and earth entering the first switch and the girl next to me out two side by side and one on top,, didn't look good at all so I put at three on top and clipped them and my tutor said that's how I show of done it
Again, just listening to the ones that I believe know what they are talking about
Fancy teaching me Mike ha

Having said that my tutor is an ex fireman, not sure what that's got to do with electrics but he should be good regards health and safety

Not your install but clearly why not to use the sticky pads ;-)

Lmao, you make me feel bad now for the customer, I honestly hands on heart I didn't know they were that bad until a few days after the install I read on here they fall off within a few days, the problem is those garage walls are but thick at all, the gaffer went through it when drilling holes for the CU

Not my intention to make u feel bad. Just can across this while doing a 3 hour ELU test and thought of this conversation.
