Positives...It can be done...and here is how.

Get your multifunctional tester....... Sit infront of your DISTRIBUTION BOARD/Fuseboard at home and test test test. Like an absolute mad man. That is where you will get your testing experience from...It will come second nature.....

Then you need to get with the correct terminology etc of electrical installations. This is an absolute must.

If you read straight from guidance notes 3,I'm afraid your going to see most of it as double dutch with no exp in the industry!!!! Start with a basic book like Brian scaddens, 17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations: Inspection, Testing and Certification IEE Wiring Regulations, 17th edition: Amazon.co.uk: Brian Scaddan IEng; MIIE (elec): Books, Get that amd the other above mentioned exam success City & Guilds | Exam Success: Inspection and Testing 2391-10

Then GN3 Guidance Note 3: Inspection and Testing Guidance Notes for Bs 7671: Amazon.co.uk: Jon Elliot: Books

Listen mate, it can be done. What you put in will be what you get out.

The industry has totally took over my life... the regs, on-site guide and GN3 folllow me everywhere now. My bird hates it. If I'm not on here in spare time, I'm in those books.

Thanks electricalserv
The basic book you mention is now at the top of my shopping list :) I think the college will borrow us a copy of the exam success one they did on the previous course not sure about the gn3 one i might phone them before i buy that one.

i had thought of doing exactly that checking the circuits at home with whatever tester i manage to pick up ,

Can you use your own tester on the course or do you have to use the college one for the exam i am pretty certain they use meggers which will be out of my meagre budget .

Indeed there are, because I have met them testing, ain't got a frigging clue, perhaps they are on here but are too scared to come out of the closet

Thanks for your help guys another wee question this time more relateing to doing the job in the field as i said i fancy being able to comply with the pat code of practice to do the 'portable appliances' which are fixed in place without a plug .clearly this is closer to regular pir type testing than pat .Do you think that i would be better to get more of a full sparky insurance than just a pat type policy and any ideas of which firm to ask for this bearing in mind i am on a budget .

cheers again

A "non spark" doing the 2391 sounds like something of a contradiction to me, like a 'non driver' passing an advanced driving test.

I did a week intensive last year, there was a guy on that that the jobcentre had sent, he'd done and passed the 17th previous, he lasted about 2 hours before the teacher told him he was out of his depth. It was free for him so he didn't seem that bothered. £600 quid, thats a lot of money.
You need to know the trade in my opinion to stand any chance of passing it, after all it's a sparks exam, luck doesn't come into it, it's bloody hard.
