Evening Fella'sHave any of you seen this type of situation before, the socket outlets actually drip/leak with this oily green fluid, its quite a tacky substance with no odour. It is not happening on the stud walls or on light switches on the solid walls, only happening on solid walls, socket circuit.Looks like a kind of oxidisation but no rust or white fur which you get in that situation, I thought it might of been the brass but it also happens on the pvc sockets in the kitchen.I thought perhaps a dodgy roll of 2.5mm all those years ago, house is 41 years old, original wiring, the only house in the estate to suffer. What do you think?, she wants to resolve it, I suggested maybe changing the backbox's and accessories on the worst outlet and see what happens before throwing money at it, [ElectriciansForums.net] Anybody ever seen anything like this before?, I'm the 6th Spark to try![ElectriciansForums.net] Anybody ever seen anything like this before?, I'm the 6th Spark to try![ElectriciansForums.net] Anybody ever seen anything like this before?, I'm the 6th Spark to try!

It needs rewiring, the cable is breaking down and the green goo is TOXIC.If you google green goo in cables you will find loads of info on it,i think it has been covered on the forum before but i cant find a link, its to do with the plasticiser in the insulation reacting with the conductors. This is not pvc as we know it,and when i put needs rewire this is going on a recommendation from the electrical safety council or somewhere similar. The installation is due upgrading when that starts to appear,it will continue to leak and in reality if that was my house,id rewire asap

Around the 70's ish, there were issues with some copper cable that reacted with the plasticiser in the PVC causing the green goo.

It is toxic, however, not that harmful if hands are washed thoroughly if touched.

It has no affect on the installation, although a rewire is recommended.

I will get around to doing my house one day :D

i found this last year at the theatre. i read an article about it in the NICEIC switched on magazine and we sent some away for analysis and contacted the HSE for advice.
Its the migration of a plasticer called di-isoctyl phthlate, used in late 60s early 70s. its mildly toxic ie do not get it into cuts, do not ingest and dont touch if you suffer from dermatitis.
The HSE said its safe to leave it alone, but ultimately, a rewire is required because as it leeches out, it leaves the cables insulation brittle.

I found this in my aunt's place when I replaced her sockets...

Was a pain in the backside to get off my hands (and it got the shiny chrome face-plates all sticky!) but didn't seem to have any effect on the insulation so I left it all be...
