Does anyone recognise the switch at the far right-hand end of this consumer unit; the one marked 'LIGHTS' ?

Is it an MCB or a switch? [ElectriciansForums.net] Anyone recognise this MCB/switch?

Thanks

The CU is is a property I'm buying. I think the cover is home made. It certainly has no IP rating with that big hole in it. I think it's as old Wylex fuse box behind the cover.

The main switch lever is broken as is the switch on the mystery MCB, which does look like a Dorman Smith - thanks to the forum members who suggested this.

The property is to be let out so at the very least the main switch, MCB and cover need fixing. Best option would appear to be a new CU, but I'm wondering what will fit into the flush housing in the picture. I'll probably post another question regarding this.

Thanks again for the pointers to Dorman Smith as the manufacturer of the MCB.
I wouldn't feel right if i didn't replace the cu, the company i work for would insist on upgrading to 17th on all rental properties and testing is done every three years by an independent electrician. Fussy, yes they are, but the safety of the tenants is paramount. it also keeps me on my toes, and keeps me in work.

If OP withdraws the mcb from the board all the relevant info is mold-printed on the side of the device.....it would have been quicker than taking a pic up-loading it and starting a thread :smug:
As far as i am concerned the cu needs to be upgraded, he has stated that it is for rental, what kind of landlord rents out properties with butchered and outdated installs like this one, i thought Rachmanism was a thing of the past. I dread to think what the rest of the place looks like.

I don't know DW, I take a picture with my phone, tablet or Canon and they are instantly uploaded to respective folders on Dropbox...easy peasy lemon squeezy..

You still have to wait for replies etc and not always correct ones at that ...... was only jesting with the post as it just seemed a bit defeatist attitude to look shrug shoulders and throw a thread up rather than having a closer look :)

If the CU is that bad and looks like it has been there for a good few years what is the wiring like probably needs the whole installation replacing
hmm....but you dont know till you get them inspections carried out +tests...
its like this:
carrying out a C/U change on a 15th ed install....
all cables good:..pass visual (from what i can see)....IR good....(R1 R2) good...
the old board looked a tw*t....theres the usual stuff around the points....such as unsleeved CPCs & ungrommeted entrys to boxes etc....
but you dont just condemn it on a whim....do you....

The connection of the Dorman Smith Mcb to the distribution board busbar will be a bodging master piece. If I remember right, they used to have exposed screwed terminals just like the Crabtree C50. Me thinks we should have a picture of the inside of the board just for the entertainment value.

So that CU pictured was part of a 15th edition install ??? I would certainly hope not, If someone will cobble a CU together like that I have to wonder what the rest of the installation is like and what hidden disasters are waiting to happen. I don't just condemn anything but that installation looks older than 15th edition
