Im sorry if this is in the wrong forum

Basically when i was doing my AM2 last week a chap who was doing his at the same time was talking to me and he told me that he self-employed and working for himself ... he's got cards made up to promote his work and has an astra estate to get between jobs with materials.... Im not sure if he's told the tax man if he's self employed but thats another matter.

All im wondering is.. He has his City & Guilds 2330 part 1 & 2. he's doing his log book and he's waiting on results for his AM2. Im not sure what jib card he has but if im right the J.I.B dont recognise City and Guilds qualifications so im sure its still an apprentice card...

Can he get away with all this and if so.. im at the same point as he is in regards qualifications but with more experiance than him so could i get away with it too? or do i need to sort out my AM2 & Logbook out first along with my 17th and 2391.. all of which im hoping will be sortied within the next 12months.. esp the first two.

Cheers
Matt

Technically you dont need any qualifications to call your self an electrician, however what you do need to work domestic is registration to a competant persons scheme and each one tends to have its own joining requirements. Jib cards are needed to get on certain sites and I like many others have never had one.

As for "could I get away with it?" then the short answer is like the chap you mention is can you carry out electrical installation safe and correctly, if so whats the problem?

You can call yourself what you like (brain surgeon etc) but you certainly need qualifications to be an electrician

Not neccessarily, you could always use BC for notifyable work like many do (or dont lol)

Agreed JIB cards are irrelevent to setting up on your own

I see a problem....someone setting up alone whilst still basically an apprentice? surely a fair few years experience after learning would be advisable, I have seen a lot of people putting themselves through training and when no job is avaliable to them start up on their own....worrying situation in my opinion
maybe im bang out of order saying this but thats my opinion

Just to correct you here. The JIB most certainly do recognise City & Guilds qualifications - in fact they require them. Even the NVQ Level 3 bears the logos of the JIB and C&G jointly.

As for the self-employed scenario, when I was an Apprentice there was one fella in our class who went "self-employed" (he wasn't really self-employed - just a tax scam). However he was told that this would not be suitable for completing the Apprenticeship / NVQ Portfolio of Evidence. I don't believe he completed his Apprenticeship.
