Apprentices

Is anybody else finding it diffucult to find an apprentice. Were in Prestatyn, North Wales and really struggling to find people intrested! Spoke to the local colleges, and about 10 lads who are looking for jobs, none even bothered to send a CV in! Were offering commercial, industrial and testing and lots of it but they dont seem intrested! Or is this just the kind of lads that are going through college now, happy to work in tesco part time?

No shortage round here. In the last 2 months I have had maybe 8 phone calls and a couple of letters from lads enrolled at college wanting placements. Unfortunately I am not in a position to offer one :(

Yeah we have taken one on who starts college in september. Were looking for somebody now who is either leaving and doing their NVQ or somebody moving into the 3rd year. Its a strange college system here, the first year they go to college 3 days, then the second year 2 days and the 3rd year is 1 day in college. Really annoying trying to get the lads at college planned in at work as they sometimes change the days around!!

I have had all stages apply to me, from first years to third years, to just completed and looking for an opening. Really wish I had the work to be able to take one on, some of these lads have been super enthusiastic. Some have been right lazy sounding sulky twerps mind you.

Im here in NI and i would jump straight at a chance like that, ive rang, sent CVS, more phonecalls, more CV'S but nowhere seems interested. I usually get "ill get back to you" or "send us your CV.....and we might get back to you..." So i think the people not takin that need their head checked.... There has only been one company to advertise for apprentices here, they got my details, rang me a week later for some more details, havent heard for 6 weeks now... its fustrating...

We're looking to take on an apprentice at the moment and giving a lad a trial for a few weeks, he's done some weekend work etc at Homebase / BQ but when it actually comes to manual labour its like your putting a gun to their head, I'm tired/it's to heavy all the excuses come out, do you really want this opportunity? Then trying to get him to remove his earphones from the iphone he has listening to music is a chore in itself, what is wrong with the youth of today?? Not trying to tarnish every youngster with that statement by the way :)

We have just had a lad just like that, failed all his level 3 and we got a phonecall from the college saying he wasnt been put into the exams again there or his NVQ cause he just took it as one big joke, so we have had to let go. Also just lost a mate to another company so looking to replace him with a decent apprentice.

I have had some ring me up with just "Got any jobs for 'prentices ?" When I tell them sorry nothing at the minute they just mumble "OK" and hang up.
Others have called me with an upbeat tone, introduced themselves, told me what they are doing, their experience and what they are looking for. Upon rejection they have thanked me for my time, and it's these lads I have chatted to and suggested other firms they might have better luck with, and taken their name and number should I need them in the future.

Not all ----ers by any means, but a fair share of them about.

It seems to be that a lot of them want everything given to them on a plate and forget that if you want anything in life you have to earn it, some things just take a little longer than others, but hard work does pay off in the long run IMO

I ring up, state who i am, why im calling them, what im going to be doing etc etc, im now sort of relying on my apprentice company becase ive rang pretty much everywhere where i can travel from in a 30-40 mile radius.... tried all the big companys.... if it means ive to get up at 5am and get 4 buses and a train then so be it, .... If anyone in NI reads this, particularly if your around Belfast, and your looking an apprentice, then please PM me or reply here. Not that many NI sparks on here though...

Just keep at it mate, something will eventually come of it, wish you were round our area!

This is a line taken from a CV i have just had...

Been working with ****** for the last few years on re wires and second fixes bath rooms and kitchen so in know the industry pretty good

ring every firm in the phonebook that's what I did in a positive manner (8 years ago so a bit different in the economic side of things) if you can't get a placement that year then get in a college and just keep looking,

took me 3 years to get the apprenticeship I wanted and I've never looked back

Perhaps doing some work experience for a few firms may help to add on the CV?

As I said, not trying to tarnish all with the quote, keep on chipping away and something will turn up. There are a couple of NI sparks on here though, maybe one of them can point you in the right direction.

I'm actively seeking apprenticeships every week and have so far found two, one said they now don't need an apprentice until September, and the other are yet to get back to me after chasing them up twice last week!

I'm finding it extremely hard to be one!
