How do you go about measuring a horse? How many hands in a cubit?

4.5 hands to a cubit. ( 1 cubit is elbow to fingertips).

The cubit is an ancient unit based on the forearm length from the middle finger tip to the elbow bottom.

I don't understand these none standardised measurements because surely my elbow to finger tips is different to yours.

I did mean New to me. Phrased it badly.
My dad uses yards being a roofer and i have no idea. Same as how he struggles with meters I suppose.

only concession i ever made to metric is weighing the pups at birth. too small for proper weights. had to weigh them in grammes.

That was back when money & measurements were done in real units, not the sissy metric system we have now. Gotta say: Tel's memory is way better than mine.
