Are my notches big enough?

Found this beauty today, a 5 inch notch in a 6 inch joist.

It wasn’t me!

I felt sorry for the homeowner - and remember finding the exact same thing under my bathroom floor years ago.

That’s a diy wetpants right there.....seem a few over the years, always makes me wonder how the f£&k they thought it was ok?

Don’t worry. The new bath with 20 gallons of water in it will hide it out of sight!

Not good is it. The homeowner found it actually, the bathroom is being stripped out. I think the joist was in the way of the shower trap.

If someone did that to my house......

Seen that done before to route 4 inch waste pipe across a room. They're not too bright some of these toilet wrestlers, bless em.

been on a job when the building control officer turned up for one of his visits and saw some joists with huge notches like that. almost had a stroke and ordered them all replaced. he was meant to be looking at the loft extension but on way up the stairs the floor boards on landing were up, hour later he wouldnt have seen them!

A pull up bar.

Probably a 3m length of joist with the notch about 500mm from the end?
Though you can’t really call it a joist anymore...

Is it an open span below, or have they been lucky and its all being propped up by a wall?
