Do it right and solder/heat shrink them in.
I reckon the inspector would be well impressed although I think I've probably just opened a huge can of worms!!!

I've tried to read this whole thread so apologies if already answered. I've been thinking about heatshrink and what its use is and I'm not too sure. The heat shrink looks good when put over a crimped joint but then I cant see the joint and I want to in case it ever came loose! Also I cant see what use heat shrink is over a crimp, the conductors are already enclosed fully by the crimp and the heatshrink will not make the joint any more secure. Still like the look of it though, hiding those horrible little crimps that are the wrong colour and mess up a lovely flowing cable!!

Then use normal uninsulated crimps and heat shrink with colour sleeving (my preferred method of crimping in a CU)
As crimped connections are deemed MF, and if crimped correctly and with a decent crimping tool, they should never need checking it will be a solid joint!!!

People use appropriately coloured heat shrink to disguise the insulated crimp colour. I personally never use PVC insulated butt crimps, they are too bulky in overall size, ..i prefer the use of heat shrink insulated crimps, that when shrunk to size , are only a little bigger than the crimp itself. Still use a coloured heat shrink tube over the joint though, if just for the aesthetics of the overall job !! lol!!

Sweated some lugs on a 120mm 4 core last week as I couldnt find the crimp tool,then whilst tidying up I found it,under some stuff in the mains cupboard I was working in,exactly where I left it the day before.

I usually have to triple check everything these days to make sure I haven't made a total goof!

Wago should make one where one cable goes in one end and the other fits in the opposite end, it would be a lot neater in CU's etc. Also it would be nice if the connectors clip together to make them neater. I saw a rival product in RS yesterday but didn't have time to look at them properly unfortunately.

I found a melted 773-102 (2 way clear non-reusable) yesterday, although that was due to ambient temperature rather than anything else. It's been replaced with a crimped and heat-shrink connection with a fibreglass sleeve over it now!
