I noticed that Hse has been doing a campaign about Asbestos and I was wondering how often do you guys come across a property that has Asbestos in it?

Also how do you guys deal with it?

If you're starting a new job do you ask the owner if they know of any asbestos or anything?

all i can say to every one out there if you find any don't do the work asbestos is no joke i can tell you first hand after waiting my farther fight for every breath he took for 4 years before he passed away last year. I have lost jobs because i pointed it out to customers so they get some other contractor in who does not know because its cheaper for them and dam the consequence for the contractor

Was working in a castle years ago doing a tray run beside pipes lagged with asbestoses, we were given an aerosol with glue like stuff and told to spray it on to the asbestoses if we disturbed it

I would think that should have been sprayed on the pipes as a precaution as when disturbed the fibers are air born and then its done its evil. Protection is always better than remedy.

Does all artex have it in then??

Just bought a new mask, it's not like the old aspitaror but has two big round filters and is supposedly designed for spraypaint fumes. Do you reckon this will help against asbestos?

For those that may not be aware. Up to the late eighties the dreaded white stuff was used in artex. So if your using a hole cutter for say, downlighters, in a plasterboard ceiling thats artexed. That dust needs to be treated with respect. Wheeeeze! Cough! Cough! ;).

Would you guys just assume that there is asbestos regardless because it's better to get it wrong and be wearing protection like a respirator than to be wrong and not wear any protection. So wear a mask/ respirator whenever you're potentially disturbing asbestos?

I think the best advice is to always use a mask when drilling anything. If your drilling a load of downlights, you dont really want your lungs full of plasterboard, whether it contains Azzy or not.

Must remember to practice what I preach:)

By coincidence, I was round my mates earlier to have a look at the lights in his kitchen. He's been doing up a bungalow, and had just installed 4 downlights in the soffet outside his front door. Guess what the soffet was made of.

If like me your getting on a bit
Its a bit late in the day to worry about ingesting more of the dreaded stuff

If you are still a spring chicken
Take all the precautions and take no chances for any employer or client

Remember the courses that you are sent on by employers has nothing to do with safeguarding your health

It takes away your ability to sue them if you have health problems, caused by asbestos, in the future, by them showing that you were made aware by doing these courses

If you haven't been on an awareness course,go on the brain numbing thing for the insight into the dangers
It may well save your future health if you take heed of the course material as well as the employers litigation fears
