hey

fricken thread in the cooker switch back box is gone. Help me re - thread it without having to take it out and spoil the carp tiling- what I use?

If the thread has stripped entirely you may have to go up to 4mm but it makes things difficult with the face plate.
One way around it is to drill though the back box and tap that at 3.5mm, you’ll need some long screws though. Another way is a dob of Araldite at the back of the lug and fix a 3.5mm nut.

Like this idea alot! Thanks

I normally charge for such pearls of wisdom, however, I am in a generous mood! :reddevil:

Squeeze the lug with a side cutters, or pliers a little, at 90 degrees, to the long axis of the box, or to the line between the mounting screws for the accessory, then re-tap the thread M3.5, voilà, you, will not have a perfect fixing, but it would hold, however, you must not rely on this for the earthing.
As has been said if its the sliding lug, swap it.

Another way but a bit fiddly is to drill the hole out so its about 4mm then remove a lug from another back box and bolt it straight through the original lug to the new lug like i said a tad fiddly another way would be a drop of super glue on the lug temp fix it with the screw while the glue dries once dry fix the socket on so many ways of doing it .

sounds like blue peter to me

Funny you mention that, on the last job I was on I found one of the sockets was fitted with just short length wood screws straight into what must have been stripped threads on the back box. They worked a treat even after I had taken them off a couple of times:thumbsup

Went to a job not long ago where all the switches had wood screws in ! wernt till i started undoing them i realised there was a reason ! there wasnt any back boxs at all they were screwed direct into wood battoning ! how bizzar is that ? had a knackerd thread and managed to lightly crush the lug with pliers then re-tap with 3.5 rethreading tool as mentioned but it was very lightly ! or a small dab of solder works and rethread !

initiative within reason , lol have found one glued on with sticks like s***T
Well maybe i was a bit curt earlier on....but it gets my goat a bit when you get posts asking how to solve very basic everyday stuff like this....mind you we all have to start from someware dont we. Cant be as bad as the time when a house my mother had......well the "joiner" had stuck the newal post on with plastic padding...when my dad leaned against it...he nearly went down the stairs head first....lucky i didn`t get my hands on that joiner (or so he called himself)......
