No doubt this might sound a bit ---- to some but I think its a fair question: Back boxes - I as I'm sure most people have built up quite a collection over the years. When you look at them there seems to always be a pattern that the M3.5mm adjustment lug is on the opposite side of the box to the earth lug. When you look in a back box then to me common sense dictates that the makers "stamp" in the base of the box be visible and the right way up to read when installed. If I do this with the Appleby I'm looking at then the adjuster will be on the left and the earth lug top right. A GET PLC one I have puts the adjuster on the right and earth lug top left. Also I like to have the earth symbol "the right way up". I always prefer my earth fly leads to be in the BOTTOM corner . I figure that even if left totally loose over time it would have a natural tendency to gravitate down and you would get some "earthing" at least. If in one of the top corners and loose I have this irrational fear that it could "fall" out. Yes I know we're dealing with solid core wire for the most part but still........ Is there any standard or protocol for this? I'd just like them all to be the same" A bit OTT on the thinking maybe?

Mmmmm
Just sat down with a fresh can of Bodingtons, and noticed I already had an unopened can.....

Thats not just a can of beer, its a statement of intent ,its preparation, dedication, excellent planning, coupled with bravado and satisfaction,if it has the side effect of getting us drunk, thats something we are prepared to endure

Not a beer drinker, so I'll go back to the thread, I like to have the earth lug on the bottom, as it's easier for me to see when terminating.
As for having the writing the right way up, if it happens then it happens.
I do try to get things marked top up the top though.

I can't see it matters if the earth terminal is top or bottom. I always wire the fly lead to the back-box first before connecting the accessory.

smart Arse.....................never though of that!!

Being an old crock it is easier to have the lug at the bottom, than trying to bend down, look up and saxaphone a cable into a lug when it's at the top.

Going completely off track was talking while home to some of the lads as you do, do any of the older lads remember the surface boxes for conduit and having to fit the earth lug, I remember having to do about 300 boxes one Saturday morning as the apprentice, and losing that bloody little grub screw, amazing how many hiding places you can find to lose the lug.

Remember that well malc...think they were MK....there was a hole in the box, flat on one side to stop the terminal turning..and a packet of brass terminals!

Always try and get the earth lug at the bottom....as above,if the box is at skirting level it's a lot easier.
Also remember my guvnor first fixing about a third of the boxes on one job with the lugs top/bottom....never got noticed till second fix....oh dear...funny though, very little was said, now if that had been me that had made a ballsup like that??......

I know where your coming from.

Connecting Klick roses on conduit boxes is a real pain. Getting the M4 with 2 lugs......

That really is a pain

whilst were are being ----, does anyone worry about how the slot looks in a 3.5mm screw when its done up?
I worked for someone once who insisted they all go vertically!!!

I might be that ----, I'm not sure. A few years ago I had an apprentice, in his third year I had him installing SWA cabling on tray in a plant room as per drawings. At the end of his first day I went to inspect his work which wasn't bad but the red stripe on the cable sheaths weren't all in straight lines. I made him remove them all and reinstall them without the twists and the red stripes all in a nice parallel formation.
