I'm a spark that's been away from the trade (off the tools) for nearly 20 years. I've taken early retirement from my job as a maintenance manager & I'm thinking of starting up on my own as an electrician. I don't need to earn a lot of money - are the start-up problems too much hassle?

Are you up to date with 17th? If going self-employed you'll need to get this at the very very least.

To be fair if you don't need the money you may aswell stick to doing litte bits and bobs, rather than taking self-employment full on. Up to you though, depends how you feel your own 'competence' level is.

Thanks for this - bits & bobs is probably how ill go, at least initially. Although I've been off the tools for a while I've never been away from the building industry so I have lots of experience.
I have an HNC & 16th, so I'll do the 17th & have a go - retirement can be a wee bit boring ;-)

Don't be fooled into doing the 17th'ed course...its like ÂŁ300 or some ridiculous price.

Just buy a copy of 17tham1 and sit the exam, its ÂŁ45...not sure how many questions but its multiple-choice, 4answer you pick the right one - easiest / stupidest exam ever.

Good luck, Mark.

100% agree, I had over 90% and never revised for it, really really easy, especially for a decently skilled man such as yourself luan with a hnc qualification.
