I love banter and without it site work is just crap...we all love a laugh and im one of the biggest p##s takers on site there is...... BUT when it gets personal and starts effecting my working day and my money then i will probably throw you over the scaffolding.
Friendly banter is healthy and good.

Quite right Dazza, and to be fair there is lots of good, funny banter on this site. but there are also a lot of good people who used to be on this site who are no longer here because of the other kind of 'Banter'.

The Dictionary definition of Banter is "The playful and friendly exchange of teasing remarks' end of.
Anything more is bullying, so that's what we should call it.

Peoples opnions of banter differ, i don't understand ... are you trying to start an argument with this thread?

Some people have a dry-sense of humour, so the banter seems more 'cutting' ... if you can't deal with the heat, get out the kitchen.

If someone gets offended over the internet .... then they need to take along hard look in the mirror if you ask me.

Substitute 'Argument' for 'Debate' Mark and yes I am. Of course people have different opinions on it but one thing that seems fairly certain is that many people do have problems with internet 'banter' that is taken too far, same as people in everyday life do.

As Sarz has pointed out, many people have severe mental issues with this and it needs attention, they are the victims, but what about the abusers? what kind of person is it who can knowingly and regularly insult and mock others without their conscience bothering them, especially when the person on the receiving end is complaining about it? telling them to "get out of the kitchen" doesn't cut it, and it's made worse when the whole gang jump in, these are the guys who need to have a look in a mirror.

Ooooh i like intelligent men! :)

I think what makes the internet different is that meaning and intent is sometimes misinterpreted - on site you may dish out banter but people can tell your jesting by the tone of your voice and facial expression (glint in the eye), but not so with text.

I do agree hawkeyes but i think its also the words that are being used and therefore the perhaps "double" meaning and content behind. I think you can distinguish between this if you have banter type of sense of humour.

In saying that some people are offended very quickly and dont do banter just because they dont get it or find it amusing so we are all individual and itd be a effing boring world if we werent!!! So work the person out before you go there would be what i work on. Some people need softly softly others can take a good hard ear bashing and can give it right back i.e. onions and mark wherever they are the banter queens hahaha.

Agreed the 'double meaning' is often my approach if I'm giving someone a good ribbing :)

I meant as in being harsh too re double meaning as in trying to dig but perhaps doing it in a way that one can not be accused "oh its just banter" but i get what you mean by double meaning. Your too soft and giggly to be a ****!!

There you go hawkeyes banter right above for u :p

Right, where's that report button ;)

I like this thread.. A good debate for once.
I have to agree that is hard to actually judge a text for its right meaning. Just look at most of mine.. When I read them they come across a lot different to what I was intending.
There are people out there that will use the "banter" excuse to bully people. They are just scummy people and scummy people will always exist. Is that sentence intended to offend bullies?? Yes it it. Bullies are scum!
Some people like to say comments to try and offend people but don't like it back. classic example was when a bloke at work asked a rude question about my wife (with a smirk on his face) I told him that I was thinking of dumping the missus and humping (didn't say humping) his daughter instead. (the smirk disappeared).
What we could do with and I have mentioned a few times in posts, is a "sarcastic font". Not saying its going to cure everything but may make some texts more clear.

I actually get you and think your funny. Maybe you write before you think hahaha. I think it depends on sense of humour. Plus you say it how it is so i kind of feel i no where i am with you haha. Am i out of that bunched up group yet u put me in :p hahaha.

Certain people really wind me up. Bullies are one of them.
I try and think about what I write.. doesn't always work out like I thought it would.... Id just like to quote "When you are a Bear of Very Little Brain, and you Think of Things, you find sometimes that a Thing which seemed very Thingish inside you is quite different when it gets out into the open and has other people looking at it.”
Sarz, I think you paid me a complement somewhere in your post. wow, Ta luv.

Bullies are a product of their own insecurities however this does NOT i repeat NOT excuse their behaviour towards others to make themselves feel better. Vicious cycle.

I did indeed credit offered where due. :)
