I think what makes the internet different is that meaning and intent is sometimes misinterpreted - on site you may dish out banter but people can tell your jesting by the tone of your voice and facial expression (glint in the eye), but not so with text.
Is this about 'banter' or another 'be nice to the cowboys' thread?
IMO 'banter' should be between two willing participants. Yes it happens on this forum, but to me 'banter' is the old guys having a go at each other for being old and past it, or northern, or southern, or having admitted to messing up an outside light several years ago or drilling through a soil pipe, and not the threads started by cowboys which invariably end up along the lines of "Oh well I'm sorry I must have missed the point of a forum", which in itself is sarcasm, what you claim to dislike so much, but in either way reciprocates with the 'perpetrator' so validates it.
I'm against bullying just as much as the next man, although to me 'cyber bullying' is something children do over facebook when it doesn't occur to them to 'defriend' or simply block the bully, but to brand all 'banter' as 'bullying' and try to ban it just seems short-sighted.
The author of the so-called 'article' describes banter as "literally and without question the single worst thing in the history of the universe". I would argue that the holocaust was worse, because that was physical bullying, and people actually died from it.
Also from expressions like "Worse than the SN1987A supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud, which wiped out six planetary civilisations"... WTF!? Who throws that into an everyday conversation? It's clear that Tom Chivers is a geek and as far as I'm concerned he can bore off.
Yes I read the title of the thread but what I'm suggesting is 'banter' (jovial ribbing between like-minded people) is getting confused with telling cowboys they're out of their depth, which in turn is getting confused with going around picking on strangers just because they're different (northern, foreign, gay, ginger etc). Its about Banter
Your all a bunch of tree huggers
( now the question is am i serious or am i joking )

This is the thing that scares me Adam do we now have to be nice and cuddly to all the clearly incompetent posters who have swapped db's etc and then come and ask the very people who's work they have stolen for advice on how to rectify it.
If that is the case then i am sorry but it is not for me.
