Dont suppose we could have a new category for basic questions. I did a 3 year apprentership with a sparks, am fully qualified but there are still some things i dont know which may appear basic and would like to be able to ask them without being judged or have my training insulted.

Any takers?

its a good idea sparks, but it would never work and would be pointless in a way. All the diy ers would go to their section and all the professionals to their section, so they diy ers on to ask questions wouldn't get there questions answerd because there would be no proffesionals on that part of the site. I think someone already said this previously. The only person who would benefit would be the time served sparky because he wouldn't get annoyed with stupid questions lol only joking. btw apoligies for the spelling its late

this can be sorted if people thnk before the type a message...we have a different range of qualified and unqualified sparks..even qualified sparks ask questions...but when u ask a resoanble question u should not get slated for asking it...i got slated a bit last night when i ask a question about a fues neutral and someone said "should u be touchin electrics.... that kind of responce is not wanted....

All your concerns have been noted.

As you will all know, that a lot of the time it is obvious that there are a few DIY members and general members of the public asking for advice and in most instances it is suggested that they seek expert help.

However, i would rather someone ask a basic question than not ask at all and risk themselves and others.

Do continue to ask any questions, as I and the other mods will be keeping a close eye on things.

Yes, there is a dilema when the person poses a very basic question

Advise may be given that assumes the questioner has a certain degree of basic electrical or diy abilities

Giving advise to someone who may be very ill informed could actually be a risky thing to do,both for their safety and others who may be affected by their eforts

The forum seems to be a very helpful place for people of all levels and should be commended for that, however,it would be helpful to the novice and the instructer for that lack of basic knowlege to be known, possibly by a dedicated section for that purpose

Why can't novices ask these questions in the forum. They are asking questions because they need an answer or guidance. What advantage would there be in having a dedicated section, none i think. You have sparks who work in all areas of the industry and decide they want a change of career.Does that make them any less of a spark from someone who has done domestic, industrial or commercial all their working lives:confused:I doubt it.

I take that view because, if I were to seek advise as a novice in some other discipline, then a forum for that discipline would be where I believe I would get the best advise

However, when asking a question I would be more comfortable knowing the people answering my question were aware of my level on that subject or better still a section where I could post a question and the people answering didn't have to second guess my level simply because of where it was posted

You say why cant novices ask a question on the forum
I have already made the statement that giving advise to someone who is very ill prepared could and very well may be an unwise action
Its better for that person to have somewhere that recognises their shortcomings.thats not to deny advise it just saves possible embarrasment to the questioner (who is sometimes derided by some because of basic lack of understanding)
It would also save misguided responses from others
Also I was refering to diy ers and people with no electrical understanding whatsoever ( a novice), who sometimes ask how to connect this or that and are blatently a danger to themselves and others

Apprentices or trainees who are seeking a carrier or otherwise are a tottaly different kettle of fish
and in no way would any of my comments apply to them, that was not the opinion expressed by me

I still regard myself as a novice.Out of the trade 20 years, got back into the trade last year and did domestic for a year, not my cup of tea.Got onto a refurb job at a university and i was in my element, loads of things came flooding back. All i want to do is industrial/commercial.
